Born in Union Co North Carolina in 1824. He enlisted at age 41 on 16 Sep. 1863 for the war. He was present and accounted for until he was transferred to Co I, 9th Regiment NC State Troops [ 1st Regiment NC Cavalry ] when this battalion was disbanded in June 1864. He served in the 9th Regiment until the end of hostilities. His archival file contains only one CMR that shows him in Co I 1st Regiment NC Cavalry.
McRae's Regiment was not a front line Regiment except for the last nine months of the war. It was orgnanized at Camp Vance in Moganton, Burke Co. NC in Nov 1863. Remaining records show that it primary function was to defend mountain passes, fight of bushwhackers, arrest, bring in deserters, bring in conscripts and escort the conscripts to training camps at Morganton or Camp Mangum at Raleigh, NC. On 1 June 1864 the secretary of war ordered the battalion disbanded and the men were assigned to the field. He married Esther Magdalene Williams in 1845. She is my distant cousin. He died in 1870 and is buried in Lewis Williams Cem. In Union Co. NC
