Family legend has Edwin and his brother Jasper captured on Culp's Hill, transferred to a prison in Ohio, then onto Ft. Delaware. He died there and was buried in Finn's Point Nat'l Cem. Jasper returned home to Madison Co. NC. Any more info or confirmation is appreciated.

Born March 15, 1824, in Johnston County NC, died as a POW on June 8, 1864 age 40, in Washington DC, in service in the 5th Infantry Company A. Enlisted on May 2, 1861 for service in the 56th Infantry Company B, raised at Cumberland County NC.

January 1, 1864 returned to service Spotsylvania, Virginia. Wounded and Pow May 19, 1864, Spotsylvania, Virginia. May 22, 1864, hospitalized and POW, Washington, DC. Died of decease July 8, 1864, Washington DC.

Preceding in death was his younger brother Pvt. John A Braddy, born Feb. 23, 1827, enlisted in August, 1861 for service with the 2nd Calvary Company D. KIA on April 13, 1862 at Pebbly Run in North Carolina. Brothers, Levi, Benjamin and Samuel also served in the CSA.

John was born in Norwood, Stanley Co. NC. He was a farmer 23 years of age. Conscripted 8 Aug 1862 and mustered at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, NC. He died 6 April 1864 of Typhoid at Wayside Hospital #9 at Richmond Va. A receipt of assets shows he had $11.50 cents in cash and his clothing was valued at $49.00. In my 40 years of research this is the first time I have seen the value of clothing of the deceased given a value. He left behind a wife and two small children. A grave marker for him was placed at Cedar Grove UMC Ch. at Norwood, Stanley Co. NC. We are related by a distant marriage. His wife Sarah Frances Rummage remarried to my distant cousin Henry R Russell. Deo Vindice

Larkin was a farmer in Johnston County, NC. When North Carolina seceded from the Union, he joined at the age of 26 and fought for the Confederacy until captured. He saw action in many of the major battles of the Civil War, including Manassas, The Peninsula Campaign, The Seven Days Battle, Antietam, and Gettysburg. During the Battle of Oak Hill (Gettysburg) on July 1, 1863, almost 60% of his regiment were killed, wounded or taken prisoner.

On Sept. 19, 1864 during the Battle of Winchester, he was captured and sent to Point Lookout Prison Camp, MD. Due to the fact that conditions in the prison camps at this point in the war were so unbearable and that the prisoner exchange programs had just about come to an end, Larkin took the Oath of Allegiance.

He joined the Union on Oct. 12, 1864 and was assigned to the U.S. Volunteer Infantry, 4th Regiment, Company E. The U.S. Volunteer Infantry was composed of about 6000 Confederate prisoners. They were later known as “THE GALVANIZED YANKEES”. Their purpose was to serve the Union in the West, where they protected settlers from Indians, restored stage and mail service, rebuilt telegraph lines and helped to protect the railroad supply trains. On June 18, 1866, he was mustered out of Union service.

After the war, Larkin came back home to Johnston County, NC, where he raised his family and continued to farm.

Was carried by train to Shouns Crossroads and was taken home to Fig, N.C.,by family in a horse drawn wagon to be buried in the Jenkins Price cemetary. He rejoined his company prior to 28 Feb 1863, and was present or accounted for until captured at Spotsyvania Court House, Virginia 12 May 1864. Private Strickland was held prisoner at Point Lookout, Maryland and then transfered to Elmira, New York 3 August 1864, where he remained until his release 29 May 1865. He died 19 August 1914, at the age of 87, and was burried in Piney Grove Church Cemetery, Hwy 701 South, Four Oaks, NC

James P. Britton was placed on his regiment's Roll of Honor for his actions on 14 September 1862, about 9:00 am, after being shot in the face, by the 23d Ohio, at Fox's Gap, part of the named Battle(s) of South Mountain. He is annotated in his unit records as 'Severely wounded at South Mountain' and for a 'Gunshot wound to the face'. He was ambulatory for several months in Petersburg, VA and Richmond, VA hospitals.

James P. Britton was a farmer prior to the Civil War in Hertford Co., NC. He was enlisted by CPT Thomas Garrett in Bertie Co., NC 18 June 1861. He gained the rank up to Full Sergeant and then reduced to the rank of Private 12 Oct 1864. James was taken as a prisoner near the end of the war and was paroled at Manchester, Virginia 25 April 1865.

Hiram was born in 1835 in Stanley Co NC and died 23 Feb 1909 in Locust Stanley Co NC. He was about 26 when he enlisted 8 Aug 1862. He was severely wounded in the shoulder 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg. Captured and confined at Fort Delaware. Then on 15 Oct 1863 sent to Point Lookout. He was exchanged at Camp Lee near Richmond 27 Feb 1865. He only has one CMR in his archival file but the above data comes from the official records of his unit in the North Carolina archives. He is buried at Meadow Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Locust, Stanley Co. NC. We connect thru a distant marriage.

James Gray Clifford, the fourth child of Joseph Clifford and Susannah Wells was born on 20 May 1816 in Rowan County, North Carolina. His first name was his mother’s father’s first name and his middle name was the maiden name of his father’s mother, Rachel Gray. He was married on 16 March 1839 to Rebecca Coker in Davie County. Rebecca Coker, the first child of William Coker and Sarah James, was born on 26 January 1818 in Rowan County.


The Civil War brought tragedy to James and Rebecca. Susannah Clementine Jones reported that James was particularly concerned that since he had relatives in the North, the War might pit brother against brother. James’s younger brother, Abner Painter Clifford, was living in Indiana by this time. Susannah reported that their older sons “being Union boys” did not volunteer, but were ultimately conscripted. Both of James’ older boys lost their lives as did his son-in-law. When it came time for their younger son, Franklin Augustus Clifford, to go, the family was particularly hard hit. Susannah Clementine Jones gave the following account of his going into the Army in 1863:

“When the morning came for Franklin to start the war, breakfast having been prepared and on the table, none felt like eating, but some of the family went to the table. But it was when Pa sat down to the table he could not eat. He broke down and wept aloud and left the table, said “My last son is taken.” He had borne up bravely till then.”

James Clifford’s two oldest sons, Joseph Calvin Clifford and William Green Clifford along with their brother in law, Robert Franklin Collette, were all inducted into Company G. of the 5th North Carolina Infantry Regiment on 30 November 13 August 1862. His younger son, Franklin Augustus Clifford was inducted into Company F, 42nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment in June 1963. Shortly after Franklin’s induction, James Clifford’s youngest son, James Roan Clifford born 29 Sep 1859 died at home on 1 September 1863.

Joseph Calvin Clifford was born in Davie County on 30 November 1839. He and his brother, William were conscripted into the Confederate Army on 13 August 1862. Both fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and Joseph was killed in that battle on 1 July 1863. 'Where There's a Will There's a Way' sets forth the following account of Joseph's death as given to the author by Ann Coker, Rebecca Coker's sister:

'Joe, she said was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg and William was taken prisoner and died as a prisoner of war in Elmira, New York. The story made a great impression on me and I can still remember the details of her story. As the North Carolina soldiers charged toward the Union lines, Joe cried out, 'Oh! Billy, I'm shot.''

William Green Clifford was born in Davie County on 20 July 1843. He went into the Confederate Army on 13 August 1862 with his brother and his brother-in-law and was with his brother at Gettysburg when his brother was killed. William was captured at Spotsylvania on 12 May 1864, was confined for a time at Point Lookout Maryland and was then transferred to Elmira, New York, where he lived to hear the news of the war being ended but died sonn there after on 12 May 1865 of chronic diarrhea.

James Clifford’s daughter, Sarah Matilda Clifford, was born in Davie County on 1 August 1841. She married Robert Franklin Collette, Sr. in Davie County on 15 November 1860. Their first child, Elvira Josephine was born in Davie County on 7 December 1861. Robert went into the Confederate Army on 13 August 1862, the same date that Sarah's two brothers were conscripted. He was captured at Spotsylvania Virginia in May, 1864, was confined for a time at Point Lookout, Maryland and was then transferred to Elmira, New York, where he died on 18 February 1865 of chronic diarrhea. During his last visit home before Robert was captured he left word that he wanted the baby they were expecting to be named Robert F. if it was a boy. Their second child, Robert Franklin, Jr, was born in Davie County on 3 Januarey 1865. (Michael Clifford and His Family, James Monroe Clifford and Frank Powers, 10 Sep 1993)

James Davis [1825-1893] was the son of Thomas Davis and Nancy Sasser. James Davis lived in Johnston and Nash Counties, North Carolina. He enlisted in the 'Dixie Defenders' [Company G] in 1861.
