I am searching for further documentation of Cpl McGee's Confederate military service. A family bio refers to 'The Catawba Soldier', Hahn, 1911 and I would like to corroborate that.

I am descended from him via L. Madorah Mcgee and Mary Mazella Massey who married John Sherman Gant, my grandfather. I was born in Charlotte, NC.

david lee mitchell was my great great grandfather. he was born in caswell county, nc in june, 1837. he enlisted in the confederate army in catawba county, nc on april 1, 1862. he served with distinction throughout the war and was discharged at appomattox courthouse in april, 1865. he died on december, 15, 1924 at the age of 87. he is buried at friendship lutheran church in the wittenburg area of alexander county, nc and has a confederate memorial grave marker. Present or accounted for until captured at Petersburg, VA, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on May 14, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.'

Note:
William M. Sneed was known as a dandy. He was of slight physical stature with unusually smal l feet, which he took great pride in. William was a lawyer, who became Clerk of the County Co urt and an officer in the Civil War. At the close of the Civil War, the county was in chao s and lawlessness was at a high. So when James Madison Bullock's slain body was found alongs ide a Granville road, no one was surprised, however, the footprints of a small manwere foun d near the body. Initially, the crime was assumed to have been committed by a travelling vag rant or recently freed slave, but eventually suspicion was placed on Sneed who began to cour t Bullock's widow. Sarah's family, the Lewis', donated the land for the first Episcopal Chur ch at Nutbush and were later associated with St. John's. The story relates that William Snee d, who was known to have been infatuated with James' wife, married James widow within weeks o fthe death. Because of William's prominence in the community, questions were raised behind c losed doors. There seems to have been a cover-up, since the law never acted upon the suspicio n. Months later, William was seen in public wearing a watch similar to one imported from Eur ope by the deceased James Bullock. After Bullock's death and Sneed's marriage, William becam e master of 'Ashlawn', the Bullock seat in Granville. The marriage was received coolly by G ranville Society. The scandal continued when both William's wife and one of his personal bla ck attendants died suddenly. Rumors came about claiming that they had discovered William's s ecret and paid for it with their lives. (re : Zeb's Black Baby). There are many discrepancie s in this tale which makes it highly unlikely that Sneed really did these things including th e following: He married Sarah 2 years after Bullock's death. Sarah's will was made in 187 2 and she died in 1878, but nothing suggests anything out of the ordinary. It seems that al though the Sneed family had great wealth and political prestige, they weren't well liked by m any people. William, his wife and their children are buried at Williamsboro in the cemeter y of St. John's.

Robert was the second oldest of the four Tunstall brothers that fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War.Robert was wounded Dec.9th 1863 but survived the war.

Severely wounded on June 27, 1862. Resigned on March 25, 1863 by reason of disabilty from wounds suffered on June 27, 1862.

This is my great grandfather. He enlisted April 1, 1862 at Catawba County, North Carolina. He was wounded May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia and became a POW May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. He was imprisoned at Point Lookout Prison, Maryland and was transferred August 10, 1864 to Elmira Prison, New York.

Isham Bennett enlisted at the start of the war at age 35. His enlistment was for a period of one year, most of which was spent in the Western Virginia campaigns. When his enlistment ran out he elected to return home to Warren County, N.C., but soon could no longer stand not being involved in the effort. He wrote several letters to the Confederate Secretaries of War, asking that he be allowed to do something to help 'while the foe is upon our sacred soil.' He ended the war as an Assistant Adjutant General in Raleigh.

Enlisted on May 18, 1861 and was killed on June 27, 1862 at Gaines' Mill, Virginia at the age of 17.

This is my great grandfather. DT ran away from home in Prince Edward County, VA, with the assistance of his grandfather, taking a slave with him (someone had to bring the horse back home). When asked by the recruiter how old he was he responded truthfully that he was 17 years old. The recruiter told him to come back after lunch and perhaps he would be 18. By God, a miracle occurred and he was. DT participated in several battles with the unit, to include Gaines Mill, 2nd Manasas, Sharpsburg, and Chancelorsville. He was injured on the first day of Gettysburg when a spent Mhinnie ball struck his leg just below the right knee and fractured it. DT was unable to walk and the fire from the Union forces was so intense, coming from two sides, that no one was able to provide for his evacuation, hence he laid in the field until he was captured on July 5th and imprisoned. Eventually DT was parolled back to the South. Once DT was able enough he returned to the regiment with his slave and was posted as an ambulance driver. As things became more heated for the South and General Lee realized there was little that could be done for the wounded due to the lack of supplies, DT was returned to the infantry and he freed his slave. Shortly thereafter, DT was again taken prisoner at the Mule Shoe at Spotsylvania. He spent the rest of the war in the prison camp located at Elmira, New York. In neither occasion of his being a captive did he receive any medical care for his injuries, which may have been to his benefit considering the quality of care offered at the prison camps. DT was finally released in August of 1865 although he never took the oath of loyalty, thereby remaining an unreconstructed Confederate for the remainder of his life. Rather than shipping him back to his home in Virginia or to where he enlisted in North Carolina, the Yankees sent him to Charleston, South Carolina so that he could walk home on his bad leg. There is far more to Daniel Taylor Wootton's life that might be of interest to some, especially his experiences in the Reconstruction period and what led up to his running away from home to enlist, but I will leave that for the curious to enquire.

William Kindley born 21 March 1823 in Davidson county NC. Taken POW, held and died at Point Lookout, Maryland on 7 May 1865.

Henry Warren was born in Halifax County, North Carolina in 1829. He was the oldest son of Thomas Warren and Rosa Shearin Warren and one of 6 brothers to serve their state of North Carolina in the War of Northern Aggression. Henry was a member of the Halifax Light Infantry, Co. G, 12th North Carolina. He was wounded at the battle of Harris Farm, a part of Spotsylvania Courthouse, on May 19, 1864. Survived the war and died in 1905. Buried in the family burying ground on the farm where he lived and where his g-g-g-grandson [myself] now lives and farms.

Attended Wake Forest College prior to enlisting on April 25, 1861. Died on July 16, 1862 while home in Halifax, North Carolina on sick leave.
