Daniel J. Cook, my 3rd Great Grandfather, enlisted on July 14, 1862 and was assigned to Company A, 62nd North Carolina Infantry. He was captured and taken Prisoner of War on September 9, 1863 at Cumberland Gap. He was transferred to Camp Douglas outside of Chicago, Illinois where he remained until his release on June 15, 1865. Prior to, and after the war, he resided in Little Cataloochee, Haywood County, North Carolina. His property is now part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and his residence, known as the "Dan Cook Cabin", is on the registry of historic places. He along with his wife, Harriett, are buried in the cemetery at Little Cataloochee Baptist Church.

Adolphus McCrary was captured at Carter’s Depot on Dec. 30, 1862, exchanged on an unspecified date probably in March of 1863.He deserted the Confederate 62nd N.C. Infantry Regiment, Co. E, on 3-28-1863. He enlisted in the Union 2nd N.C. Mounted Infantry, Co. H, on 11-1-1863. He deserted the Union Army on 4-20-1864. There is no record of his return to duty, but he appears to have been a prisoner of war and restored. There is an unreadable document from the Record and Pension Office that may have included his restoration.

Promoted to Sergeant prior to September 1, 1862. Reported present or accounted for through June 30, 1863. Captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, September 9, 1863. Sent to Louisville, Kentucky. Confined at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, September 26, 1863. Released at Camp Douglas on June 15, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

He had a fair complexion, with brown hair, blue eyes and was 5' ft 6. This information from footnote website, now fold3 Historical Military Records Oath of Allegiance to the United States, Roll of Prisoners of War released June 15th 1865.

Pvt.Cash signed in Transylvania, NC and sent to Cumberland Ridge after a few skirmishes. Several spectulations as to how a couple of entire companies were surrendered with almost no shots fired. Most of the men were marched to Maryland and the others were then marched on to Camp Douglas in Ill. where Pvt.Cash died a couple years later, 2 months before the last of the prisoners were to be released. Death cert. shows a type of blood poisoning due to dehydration. He is buried in the Confederate mound just outside of Chicago Ill.
