7th Ohio Infantry
Company Unknown
Hiram McQuiston - Private
Hiram is my great-great-grandfather. He served with the 7th Ohio from his enlistment in 1861 until after the battle of Antietam in 1862, when he joined the 6th US Cavalry. I'd like any information about his family heritage in Ohio...

Company K
John H Ernst - Private
John Ernst had settled in Fayette County, IA, in 1857 but returned to his birth state of Ohio to join the Union Army after war was declared. The 7th served in virtually every major battle in Virginia, from chasing Stonewall Jackson (and losing) through Bull Run and Chancellorsville, as well as Antietam in Maryland and Gettysburg, Pa., after which the 7th chased Gen. Robert E. Lee all the way to the Manassas Gap. In fact, Ernst fought against Stonewall's forces at Port Republic & Cross Keys in the Shenandoah Valley, less than four miles from where I currently live, yep, the heart of the Valley.
