On page 207 of Caldwell's History of Belmont and Jefferson County, David L. Dewault [sic] is listed as a private in Co. B., 98th Regiment O.V.I.; Civil War. Further down the page it says David L. Devault, discharged for disability Dec 14, 1863.

Privat David L. Devault of Captain Mitchell's Company (B) of the 98th Regiment of Ohio Vols was enlisted by I. R. Mitchell of the 98th Regiment of Ohio Vols at St. Clairsville on the sixth day of August 1862 to serve 3 years; he was born in Belmont in the State of Ohio is forty-one years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, Hazle eyes, Brown hair, and by occupation when enlisted a farmer. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty 60 days.

I certify, that I have carefully examined the said David L. Has been in Service about one year and in the Hospital about eleven months of this time. He is of no use to Uncle Sam under Heaven. He was rejected by the Examining Board for the Invalid Corps. On page 207 of Caldwell's History of Belmont and Jefferson County, Moses H. Dewault is listed as a private in Co. B., 98th Regiment O.V.I.; Civil War. Further down the page it says: Moses H. DeVault [same company different spellings] died of wounds received in battle at Jonesboro, Ga., Sep 1, 1864.

Joseph Rodney Mitchell - Lt. Colonel
Joseph Rodney Mitchell organized Company B of what became the 98th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in July, 1862. He was appointed as the captain of the company. He later was promoted to Major and shortly after Lt. Colonel. He resigned his commission for health reasons in the fall of 1864.

Enlisted 15 August 1862 Promoted to full Corporal Musterd out 08 June 1865 in Cleveland. He served in all engagements except Chickamauga due to being on sick call. He marched through Georgia with General Sherman.

William Browning Lucas - Corporal
William was too young to serve in the army during the Civil War, however he inlisted and was accepted in the Ohio Volunteer Regiment for his good marksmanship and as a sharp Shooter. He became a Corporal in Captain Hiram J Craft's Company.

Broomhall Brown McKisson - Private
Broomhall and his brother George enlisted together at Steubenville, OH. He was fatally wounded at Chaplin Hill in the Battle of Perrysville, KY. He was shot through the bowel and died 6 October 1862 at age 31. His wife Jane (Dermot) had 3 children and filed for his pension. Broomhall was buried at Camp Nelson in Danville, KY.

Bennington Logan - Private
Bennington was born in Wasington Twp, Harrison County Oh. 22 Feb 1843. Just north the town of Tippecanoe Ohio on the Family farm. I have a letter that was written by Bennington while he recoverd from injuires(wounded in the leg) recieved at the battle at Perrysville Ky. Talks about others of the 98th, Robert.A.Clark being killed, one of Jim Cummings boys killed and Enoch.W.Conaway were killed. John.W.Walker was shot through the mouth ball passing through his cheeks, Hugh A Birney shot through the thigh and broke it.
James Watson wounded hit by a tree limb falling on him.
He states John Copeland is in good health.
Speaks that Colonel Webster was killed and that he was very kind to his men. A copy of this letter has been left with Kentucky Historical Society, Perrysville battlefield.

At age 26 he enlisted as a private in Co 'G' 98th Ohio Volunteers 9 Aug 1862. Received severe gunshot wound in groin at Battle of Perryville, KY 8 Oct 1862. Hospitalized until discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of Disability 18 Feb 1863. On 4 Jul 1863 he received commission as 1st Lt in Ohio State Militia as a result of Governor David Tod's call for troops to defend Ohio against 'invasion' by CSA General John Hunt Morgan(Morgan's Second Ohio Raid)

Along with his brother-in-law, John Christy, he enlisted 9 Aug 1862 as a private in Co., 'G', 98th OVI. Pvt. Henry Jackson, Musician, Co. G, 98th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was killed in battle at Chicamauga, Ga 20 Sep 1863. Reported as being 19yrs of age at death and as having been paid $25 enlistment bounty.
