John Lenocker - Private |
John was born in Bern, Switzerland 27 Aug 1943. His family emigrated to the US in 1849, settling in Ohio and farmed. John was drafted 8 Aug 1661 as a private in Company F, 16th Infantry and mustered out 27 Aug 1843 at the end of his service. Information about his service is not clear. One document indicated he was never captured while another document reported that he took part in all unit engagements until captured at Chickasaw Bayou, Vicksburg on 29 Dec 1862, during General Sherman's failed attack on the Bluffs which cost the Union attackers over 1,700 casualties. According to the unofficial document we have access to, he was paroled - first in Vicksburg MS, Jackson Barracks, New Orleans LA, then allowed to head north and was able to find his way home (no dates found) where he recovered from being sick. A family story passed down about "Uncle John" is that there had been no communication from him since entering the army to his family since going to war. The family didn't know if he had survived. He simply walked up to the family farm and said I'm back. After recovering, he went to Camp Chase in Columbus, OH and was discharged in October as his term was complete. After the War he and his family moved to Madison County, Iowa where the family (parents and 8 children) farmed. John eventually bought a farm but sold it and moved to Los Angeles in 1904. John moved to the Fresno area in 1908 and bought 80 acres to be close to his nephew (Durbin Lenocker, my grandfather) and sister. He passed 20 May 1927 and is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Fresno, CA.
