Israel served in the Civil War. Rank in Sergeant; rank out 2nd Lt. 49th regiment, Ohio Infantry; Co. F (nara pub#M552;roll #110;Film#882323) He enlisted 8/16/1861 in Fremont, Ohio . He was wounded and discharged 12/31/1862, 8/21/1863 –Notes –Stone River, TN (info from Rutherford B. Hayes Center). Died October 21, 1866. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont, Ohio.

Killed in action May 27, 1864 at Pickett’s Mill, Georgia. Research says most were buried on the battlefield but reinterred in 1866 in the Marietta National Cemetery. No sign of George burial here. Any ideas how to find out if he is at Marietta?

He was a school teacher at time of enlistment 5 Sep 1861. According to obituary he was twice taken prisoner and received a sabre wound at Battle of Murfereesboro. He was discharged 8 Sep 1863 at Nashville, TN. Post-war served as rail road express agent and served as mayor of Village of Greenspring, Seneca Co., OH
