John W. Page - Private |
My 2nd Great Grandfather was John W. Page - born 18 MAR 1829 in Juniata County , Pennsylvania..
He enlisted as a Private in the 2nd PA Heavy Artillery on 19 MAR 1864 and was asigned to Battery ''L''. He enlisted for a term of 3 years but this was short lived as He was captured and became a Prisoner of War of the South shortly thereafter. From the history of this Unit , about this time (MAY 5-21 1864)they (Now the 2nd Provisional Artillery), were engaged in the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia,-Spotsylvania and the Battle of Cold Harbor (June - July 1864). I do not know for sure where He was captured but I continue to search for the evidence.
He was moved to the Andersonville Prison where He died 31 JUL 1864 from contracting Dysentery from the horrible living conditions there. He is buried in the Andersonville Cemetery in grave #4415

William B. Phillips, my great-great grandfather, was an original member of the famous 'Schooley's Battery' from Scranton. His unit spent late 1862 through early 1864 at Ft. Lincoln, Washington D.C. as a part of the Federal Defenses North of the Potomac. On April 20,1864 he was promoted to Adjutant of the newly formed 2nd. Pa. Provisional Heavy Artillery. His Regiment then joined the IX Army Corp of Ambrose E. Burnside and saw combat at the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Spotsylvania Court House and the Battle of Petersburg. He was one of 6 officers of his regiment who was captured at The Battle of the Crater. He was sent to Camp Asylum in Columbia South Carolina where he was held prisoner until March of 1865. I have more than 30 of his letters written during his Civil War service. They can be viewed in their entirety at www.letters1862-1864.blogspot.com
