53rd Pennsylvania Infantry
Company Unknown
John Rutter Brooke - General
John Rutter Brooke is not my relative however I am researching his service in the Civil War and found this information in Myers, Irvin G. We Might as Well Die Here: The 53rd Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Infantry. Shippensburg, PA: White Mane Books, 2004. page 269.

Colonel John Brooke became the regimental commander of the 53rd PA on November 5, 1861. He fought in every major battle of the 53rd until Cold Harbor where he was severely wounded and had to be taken from the field. He became a brigade commander in the Second Corps in the reorganization of the Army of the Potomac before the Battle of Chancellorsville largely due the extremely positive opinion of his military capabilities held by General Winfield Scott Hancock. He was promoted to Brigadier General on May 12, 1864; the very day he led his brigade in battle at the Bloody Angle of the Mule Shoe Salient at the Battle of Spotsylvania. After being wounded at Cold Harbor in the charge of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery, he received a promotion to Brevet Major General on August 1, 1864. He never returned to the 53rd but remained in the regular army for the rest of his life, fighting in the Indian Wars in the west and the Spanish American War at the turn of the century. He briefly served as Military Governor of Puerto Rico and then Cuba. He died at the age of 88 in Philadelphia PA in 1926 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC.

Birth: Dec. 28, 1842
Union County
Pennsylvania, USA

Death: Dec. 21, 1862
Washington City
District Of Columbia, USA

Member of Company E, 53rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Army Corps. George enlisted on 7 Sep 1861 and was mustered in on 16 Oct 1861.

The 53rd was part of the garrison manning the defenses of Washington around Alexandria, VA through the winter of 1861-1862.

As part of the 53rd, George took part in the Seven Day's battles, being engaged at Fair Oaks, Gaines Mill, the Peach Orchard and Savage Station, and Malvern Hill. He was in the battles of South Mountain and Antietam ('Bloody Lane').

At the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, the II Corps was commanded by MG Darius N. Couch and the 1st Division by BG Winfield S. Hancock and the 3rd Brigade by Col. Samuel K. Zook. The assault against Marye's Heights on Dec. 13th, by the 1st Division, II Corps is authentically depicted in the movie 'Gods & Generals' where the 3rd Brigade immediately preceded the 2nd 'Irish' Brigade in the attack. It is here on the 13th, according to George's service record, that he was wounded.

Mortally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, by gunshot, George died in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC and was brought home for burial in Union County, Pennsylvania, where he lies beside his parents.
