James was born in 1828 in Mount Crogan, Chesterfield Co. So.Car. he was 32 years old when he joined on 22 April 1861, enlisted by J.C. Craig. He was in [Rutledge's] Company. He was captued at Lynch's Creek on 25 Feb. 1865 and transported to Hart's Island in N.Y Harbour. He was released on 16 June 1865 after 'swallowing the yellow dog... '

John was born in Mount Crogan, Chesterfield County, So.Car. in 1821 and was abt. 40 years old when he joined Co. A 4th Regt. S.C. Cav. [Rutledge's] on 19 Feb. 1864 at Camp. He has several brothers and cousins in this unit.

Joseph was born in 1823 and was 37 years old when he joined Co A. 4th S.Car. Cav. [Rutledge's] His was a family effort to drive out the invaders as he had three brothers in this unit.

Joseph was born in Darlington Co. SC he was about 35 y/o when he enlisted at camp for the war on 19 Feb 1864. He has 4 cards in his archival file. He married Eugenia Haseltine Sinclair in 1852. He is buried at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Florence, SC

He enlisted at [camp Pocotaligo, So.Car.] on 1 April 1864 in Co A. 4th So.Car. Cavalry [Rutledge's] CMR: Feb.29 to 31 Aug. 1864. He is detailed as a courier at Brigade HQ. then on extended or daily duty assigned as Provost Guard.

William was 20 years old when he joined [at camp] on 22 April 1862. Enlisted by J. C. Craig. He is with several family members [Brothers] in this unit. [A real and true 'Band of Brothers', not some made up hollywood name. He is detailed on Fatigue Duty for the Regimental Quatermaster. In August 1863 he is again on detached duty as courier at Dist. HQ by order of Col. Rutledge

Charles was from the Chesterfield District of SC the Post Office was at Cheraw. He enlisted at age 17 at Cheraw, SC on 26 Dec 1861. Enlisted by Capt Craig for the war. 26 June 1863 he is on detached duty searching for cattle. 26 Feb 1864 he is in hospital at Raleigh, NC with Typhoid Fever. He never recovered and was sent home to Cheraw, SC on 60 day furlough where he died 15 Oct 1864. He was assigned to Butler's Brigade. Note on CMR to see 6th Regt SC Cavalry. Battles: Black River, Raid at Combahee Ferry, Lowe's Mill, & Cunningham's Bluff 24 Nov 1863.

Oliver was born 30 Sep. 1830 in Chesterfield County, SC probably in the Court House Township. He enlisted at Cheraw, SC on 13 Mar 1862 by J.C. Graig for the war. He has 21 cards in his archival file most showing him assigned as a nurse in the regimental hospital. He is given a 10 day furlough beginning on 25 June 1863. His regiment was in Battles: Haw's Shop, Matadequin Creek, Trevilian Station, Vaughn Road, Burgess Mill. Carolina Campaign and others. He married Rachel T.M. Rogers in 1851. He was captured in Anson Co. NC and sent to Newbern and on to Point Lookout Md. Released 13 May 1865 after swallowing the "Yellow Dog" It is noted that his occupation is that of a Mechanic. He died 30 April 1898 and is buried along side his wife at Antioch Methodist Church. Hornsboro, Chesterfield Co. SC. He and five other nurses of his regiment requested to be detailed to help the poor and families of absent soldiers families / request was granted. We are related by marriage.

Phillip was born 8 Aug 1830 In Chesterfield Co. Court House Township, SC He enlisted 26 Dec 1861 at Cheraw, SC as a Private in Co A 4th SC Cavalry [ Rutledge's] He has 14 cards in his archival file. In Aug 1864 he was promoted to 3rd Sgt. Battles: Haws Shop, Matadequin Creek, Trevilian Station, Vaughn Road, Burgess's Mill, Petersburg Siege, Carolina Campaign, Monroe's Crossroads and Bentonville. He died 20 Nov 1880 in Chambersville, Collin Co. Texas and is buried in the town cemetery. He is the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Andrew was b. 16 Nov 1828 in Old Marion Co. SC. He enlisted in Marion Co at the age of 32. He has 13 cards in his archival file. On 22 April he is assigned extra duty as Company Commissary a job he held through out the war. Assigned to Department of SC, Fla & Ga. where they engaged the invaders at Black River fought on 13 Aug. 1862. In March 1864 they are sent to Virginia. Battles: Haws Shop, Matadequin Creek, Trevilian Station, Siege of Petersburg, Vaughn Rd. Burgess's Mill, Carolina Campaign. Monroe's Crossroads aka Fayetteville Road and Bentonville. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3x removed Mary J Hendrick. He died 17 Feb 1887 and is buried at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Mount Croghan, Chesterfield Co. SC.

James was a brother in law to the Burch family having married Elizabeth Thomas Burch of Mount Crogan, Chesterfield Co. So.Car.
He enlisted at Cheraw, So. Car. on 26 Dec.1861 At Cheraw SC enlisted by J.C Craig as a Pvt. in Co. A Rutledge's Cav. Regt. He was promoted to Bvt.2nd Lieut in July 1863. He is temporarily assigned as a trainer on the drill field. May 1864 he is in hospital with dx.Inf.Febris he is in Butler's Brigade. Return to duty 1 June 1864. CMR Shot in left foot on 29 Sept. 1864 during the siege of Petersburg near Dinwittie Court House and sent to hosp. Sent on wounded leave to Chesterfield District So. Car. He is away on wounded leave when his unit is inspected by Maj. Gen. Wade Hampton on 30 Nov. near Petersburg, Va. He married Elizabeth Thomas Burch and reared a large family. He died 1 April 1880. He fought the good fight and may God rest his soul.

Harris was born 31 Jul 1830 in Marlboro Co. South Carolina. He was married to Mary Caroline McLaurin. He has 3 cards in his CSA archival file. He was enlisted 26 Dec 1861 at Cheraw, SC by J.C. Craig for 12 months. This Regiment is also known as Co A 12th Battalion Cavalry 4th Squadron. Much of the history of the 4th Cavalry was burned it is difficult to follow the consolidations of units. After consolidation with the 10th SC Cavalry on 16 Dec 1862 it was re-designated as the 4th SC Cavalry. It remained in the Dept. of SC, Ga. & Fla and saw its first action on 4 May 1863 at Murray's Inlet. It moved north and saw action at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania C.H. , North Anna, Va. Hawe's Shop, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege. Vaughn Road and the Carolina Campaign. It ended its service under Logan's Brigade, Butlers Division, Hampton's Cavalry Command, Army of Tennessee April 1865. He died 2 May 1897 and is buried beside his wife in the family Stanton Cem. Clio, Marlboro Co. SC

Henry was 24 years old. He enlisted at Grahamville, [Camp Hampton] 0n 20 Jan 1862. In Sept 1863 he is detailed to seed wheat. In 1864 he is given leave for 40 days to find himself a horse. He was paroled 26th April 1865. He was in Logan's Brigade at the time of surrender. He is my 3rd cousin 4x removed and the son in law of Sarah Thomas 1814 - 1879.

John, was born in Armenia,Chester County SC. He was about 31 when he joined Capt O Barber's Co 2nd Battn: SC Vol. Cavalry AKA 10th Battalion. Enlisting at Camp Hampton on 20 Jan 1862 for 1 year and re-enliting for the war. He survived and raised a large family.

Thomas was born in Chester County SC. He enlisted May 1861 In Captain Barber's Co. Mustered in at Grahamville, [Camp Hampton]. Oct 1863 finds him on picket duty and assigned to the ambulance Corps in May of 1864. He served honorably thru out the war and was paroled with his unit in April 1865 in Hillsborough, NC.

James enlisted the same day at his brother Nathan. Enlisted at Bennettsville,, Marlboro Co, SC. for 12 months. He was 26. Have not found a marriage for him. His archival file is incomplete. The records do not show him surviving the invasion. It is thought that he died of disease or in battle and rests in a far off unmarked grave. Another sacrifice on the alter of northern aggression and greed.

Nathan enlisted in Co. C 12 Battn: S.C Cav. at Bennettsville, , Marlboro District, South Carolina on 12 Jan 1862. Enlisted by Capt. W.P. Emanuel for 12 months. This unit was mustered into the field as 4th Squadron S.C. Cavallry. This unit was consolidated with the 10th Battn: S.C. Cav. and two independent companies to form 4th Regt. SC Cav. Nathan Enlisted in the 4th on 1 May 1862 at camp on Cat Island S.C. in Co.C 4th SC Vol's, He is home sick from 8 July to 7 August 1862.

Cornelius was born 30 Oct 1838 in Marlboro Co. SC. he is about 23 years old when he enlists on 12 Jan 1862 at Bennettsville, in aforesaid county. Co C. Capt W.P. Emanuel's Co. 12th Battalion SC Vol. Cavalry. Mustered 4 Feb 1862 at Georgetown, SC. His horse is valued at $171.00 and equipment at $13.00. A CMR dated 17 July 1863 gives his rank as 3rd Sergeant. This company on 16 Dec 1862 is consolidated and known as 4th Squadron South Carolina Cavalry [Rutledge's] He has 5 cards in his 12th Battn: archives and 2 cards in his 4th SC Cavalry archives. Assigned first to the Dept of SC, Ga, & Fla. Moved to Virginia in 1864 and saw action in the following battles: Haws Shop, Trevilian Station, Siege of Petersburg, Vaughn Road, Burgesse's Mill, Carolina Campaign, Monroe's Crossing, & Bentonville. SC. He married my distant relative Elizaberh Rebecca "Bettie" Mitchell. He died 19 Aug 1907 and they are buried at Salem Baptist Cem. Bennettsville, Marlboro Co. SC.

William was born in Georgia near the SC Line on 18 Apr 1841. He enlisted 30 Oct 1861 at South Santee South Carolina In Co D 4th SC Cav. [Rutledge's] In June 1864 he is in Butlers Brigade.
He is about 20 years old. He fought with his unit throughout the war. He was on detached duty at Stones Creek with a disabled horse. He is the Father in Law of my 4th Cousin 3 x removed, Motie Rogers of Florence, SC 1880-1931

B.1821 D. about 1900 unable to find death record. First reported in Capt. Thomas Pinckney's Co.A St. James Squadron Byrd's Battalion Sept. 1862. June 1863 Muster Roll shows he was paid $24.40 for use of his own horse & owed 6 mo. pay for use of own gun. Detailed by order of Gen. Beauregard for special duty {unknown}. March to Aug. 1864 absent on horse detail. Dismounted since Aug. 1864. Reg. reported to Gen. Hampton in Va. May 28, 1864. A wonderful letter home describes duty below Petersburg defending South Side RR to Weldon NC. Making up brestworks . 1st battle of Hatchers Run Oct. 27 '64 death of Gen. Hampton's son Preston. Being on skrimish line. Woods in front of his position 'strewed' with dead yankees. Engaging enemy sharpshooters. Being renforced with Conf. infantry. Etc. He is buried in St. Paul Cemt. Summerton SC. and is brother to John M. Rowe 5th SC Cav. & James L. Rowe of 23rd SC Inf.

Thomas was the husband of Matilda A. Foxworth. He was a Private in Company F, Fourth Regiment Cavalry, SC Volunteers, in the Confederate States Provisional Army.

Alexander was born in Red Bluff, Marlboro District, SC He was about 38 years old when he enlisted at Bennetsville in the aforesaid District, on 7 Mar 1863. Enlisted by Henry Edens for the war. He was paid $21.60 cents for the use of his horse. He was plagued by sickness and spent time in camp and hosp. 24 July finds him sick at Laurel Hill, Va. His horse is sent to Lynchburg, Va. 7 Sept 1864 finds him sick in hosp with Typhoid and is given a 30 day sick furlough. Thus ends his archival record. He recovered and died in 1890. He is buried in Stanton Cem, Clio, Marlboro County SC.

Lauchlin was about 34 years old when he enlisted for service in Co E.4th SC Cavalry. This unit was raised in Marlboro Co. SC. He is not listed in the Natinal Archives. However He is found in the book History of Marlboro Co. SC written by J.A.W. Thomas [ his father in law ] Laughlin survived the war.

John was born in 1826 he was about 35 years old when he enlisted 12 Jan 1862 at Bennettsville, Marlboro Co. SC in Co E 4th SC Cavalry. He has 14 cards in his archival file. He has a horse. He was mustered at Georgetown by Henry Edens for the war. It seems he had an adjustment problem as he was arrested and was in the guard house on 30 July 1863. 3 Feb 1863 he has no horse and is considered dismounted infantry. 31 May 1864 he is wounded in the side in battle at Richmond, Va and is given a wounded furlough on 9 June 1864. In Sept 1864 he is a patient in Wayside Hosp # 9 in Richmond Va.. No Dx given. He is transferred 10 Oct 1864 to Steward Hosp. at Richmond with remarks on card: Marion C. H. SC. He survived the war and died 5 Feb 1915 and is buried along side his wife [ my 3rd cousin 2 x removed Martha A Collins ] at McLucas aka Askew Cem. Clio. Marlboro Co. SC

John was the son of John and Elizabeth Lane Blackman. He was married to Caroline Mears and Ann Bird.

The following account comes from the book A History of Marion County by W.W. Sellers:

'The whole South might be challenged to Produce a parrallel to John Blackman for unquestioned patriotism and cool courage. He volunteered in the Southern cause at the age of fifty-nine; he went into the army in Virginia, and after staying in service, was discharged on account of his age.

He knocked around the camp for three or four days, with a discharge in his pocket. In the meantime, a battle occured. Jack went back to his company, took his gun and went into the fight, was shot through the abdomen, the ball passing out at the rear-it happened not to cut any of his intestines, and Jack survived it; he lay in the hospital for two or three months, and then returned home.

Jack Blackman lived to be ninety years of age; in many respects, he was the noblest man of his day. Jack ought to have a monument erected to his memory-it is already erected in the hearts of all who knew him and knew of him.'

Elly was born 22 Nov 1816 in Marion Co. So.Car. He is 42 years old when he enlisted 3 Feb 1862 at Marion, Marion Co SC in Capt. D Moore's Co SC Vols. His horse is valued at $130 and equipment $30. Which became Co F 4th So. Car. Cavalry. [Rutledge's] He was plagued by bad health and submitted his letter to resign his commission on 25 Dec 1862 while stationed at Georgetown, SC. The letter survived as did the surgeons letter recommending his discharge. He had 8 cards in archival file. He died 7 Nov 1880. He was the Parental grandfather of the wife of my 3rd cousin 2 x removed. They are buried at Tranquil Methodist Ch. Cem. at Marion, Marion Co. SC. I pray his soul is at rest.

Serg. Edward C. Collins 1829-died about 1910 enlisted with Co F, 4th SC Calvary, CSA. He was from Ariel's Crossroads, Marion, SC & was one of 4 brothers that enlisted with the CSA. He was the only one to survive the war. He was the son of John J. Collins (War of 1812 Vet.) & Elizabeth Wheeler (sister of Gen. E.B Wheeler). His widow applied for a pension in Florida 1910 (so he must have living there when he died). His brother (John E. Collins) was my GGG-grandfather. Burial unknown.

John was born in Marion, Marion County SC in 1826. He enlisted in said county 14 Jan 1862 at age 35 in Capt D. Monroe's Co. SC, Vol's. aka 12th Battalion Cav. and 4th Squadron Cav. Until March of 1964 operated in South Carolina in Dept of Fla, Ga & SC when they were transferred to the Army of Northern Virginia. as 4th SC Cav. [Rutledge's] He has two cards in his archival file. His horse is valued at $150 and equipment at $10. Battles: Haws's Shop, Trevillian Station, Siege of Petersburg, Vaughn Road, Burgess's Mill, Carolina Campaign, Monroe's Crossing and Bentonville. He is the father in law of my [Sarah Penelope King] 4th cousin 3 x removed. I have not found a death date.

Enlisted March 1863 at Camp Pritchard in Company H, 4 SC Cavalry, Rutledge's Regiment. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall, dark complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. He was discharged from duty due to chronic nephritis and diarrhea.

Feb 1863 detailed as clerk to Lt Col Wm Stokes, commanding. According to Lt Col Stokes account, he disbanded the Regiment and sent the men home. When left with no mules to pull the Headquarters wagon, Stokes burned it rather than have it fall into Union hands. Therefore no Muster Roll record after Dec 1864.
The widow's pension application states that he surrendered at Greensboro NC on 26 Apr 1865.

He is also listed as serving 90 days in 1862-63 in the sixth South Carolina Reserves

Enlisted May 1, 1862 at Cat Island, South Carolina. Served at engagements at Combanee River, Lowndes Mills, Cunningham's Bluff all here in S. C. Requested a transfer to D Co. 2nd S. C. Artillery around Nov. - Dec. 1863 with the rank of Private, so that he could be with his cousins. While with the artillery unit he saw service at James and John's Island, Fort Sumter, Charleston bombardment and Burden's Causeway, (all in South Carolina).
