In 1862, Thomas Milton Chiles enlisted as a Sergeant in Company C, 7th Regiment South Carolina Volunteers under command of his brother-in-law, Capt. Patrick H. Bradley; later Thmoas was appointed Adjutant to Col. David Wyatt Aiken. This regiment known as 'the Bloody-Seventh' engaged in their first serious combat at Savage Station on June 29, 1862 during the Seven Days Campaign and every major battle going forward. At Maryland Heights on September 13th, Adjutant Chiles was wound slightly in the face, but continue to fight. Four days later at the Battle of Antietam, Adjutant Thomas Milton Chiles was mortally wounded causing him to depart his earthy life.

Brigade mail carrier, got the mule he road and 4 half dollars. Survived the Bloody 7th without a scratch.

His headstone can be found at Bold Spring Baptist Church in Greenwood S.C. He survived the war to move back the 'Hard Labor Section'

John Andrew Devlin, a son of James J. & Mary Ann Devlin, was born in Cedar Springs, South Carolina. On April 15th 1861, John A. Devlin enlisted as a Private in Company C, 7th Regiment South Carolina Volunteers under command of Capt. Patrick H. Bradley. He was 18 years old.

John Andrews Devlin is buried at Due West A.R.P. Churchyard cemetery; where his tombstone reads, 'JOHN ANDREW DEVLIN June 27, 1840 - Sept 24, 1901 ------- For four years a Confederate soldier a loyal friend, a loving husband, a devoted father, a sincere Christian. What to us is sunset to him is dawn. They also which sleep in Jesus, will God bring with him.'

William Paul Devlin, the 2nd of three sons of James J. & Mary Ann Devlin, was born January 12th 1844 in Cedar Springs, South Carolina. On April 15th 1861, William along with his older brother,John Andrew Devlin, enlisted as a Private in Company C, 7th Regiment South Carolina Volunteers under command of Capt. Patrick H. Bradley. He was 17 years old.

Private William P. Devlin served until he was discharged at Greensboro, N.C. on May 15th 1865. During the war, William was wounded in the left hand and through the left thigh. After the war, he married Miss Lillis Purdy, also from Cedar Springs. They had one son, Robert. At the age of 75, William Devlin applied and received a pension for his service. He died on th 29th of May 1925 and was buried in Cedar Springs A.R.P. Churchyard cemetery.

Jabez was educated at the common schools and volunteered in Co. C 7th S.C. Regiment in 1861, he was 3rd Sergeant. He was cousin to almost everyone in Co.G 14th SC. In the first day's battle at Savage Station near Richmond he was wonded and bled to death before he could be found. He was buried in soldier fashion, but it was decided by his mother and brother that his remains must rest in the Campbell grave yard. Fred Cook was sent on the mournful errand which was found hard to accomplish. The body was located and put in the coffin and the coffin was put into a larger box wherein much wheat bran was placed all around it and carried to the depot where the men were forbidden to carry southward the dead, for want of space.
The negro man who was in charge declined, after some questions and answers, to allow it to be put on board, but after some benefaction offered and received, it was put on board. Thence it came down from the C&G depot toward Bradleys or Millway, where a sorrowing crowd accompanied it to the Campbell grave yard. No better close of this narration can be found than the words of his brother, Robert, when he read the telegram announcing the fatal event: 'How sleep the brave, who sink to rest, by all their country's wishes blest!'. Jabez was engaged to Ann Cook.

Samuel Bussey Rogers was my great-grandfather. He was born 15 Nov. 1846 in FL & died 13 Jan. 1923 in Lincolnton, GA. His parents were Patrick Simpkins Rogers & Sarah Lavender Edmunds. Samuel Bussey Rogers married Maryann Caroline Hamilton.

Pvt. Benjamin Franklin Collins 1848-1908 enlisted with Co. D, 7th SC Reserves, CSA. He was the son of Serg. John E. Collins Co. H, 1st SC Rifles (KIA) & Ann Catharine Davis of Ariel's Crossroads, SC. Benjamin married Emily McRae & raised at least 3 children. Ben Collins was named after his maternal grandparents (Benjamin S. Davis & Julia Franklin Avant) of Marion, SC. Ben F. Collins is buried at Ariel Baptist Church in Marion, SC. His marker says: Ben Collins died Feb. 12, 1908. Benjamin F. Collins is my gg-grand uncle via his sister Maria Louisa 'Lou' Collins Crawford of Marion & Horry, SC.

William is my second great-grandfather. He was the son of Valentine and Mary Collins Rowell. He was married to Annis Dozier on December 12, 1875.

Company D 7th Battalion, SC Reserves

Mr W. D. Rowell, age 72 years Confederate veteran and one of the best citizens of the Centenary section, died at his home near that place Thursday morning, after an illness of about six weeks. Heart disease was the cause of the death of this good citizen. The body was laid to rest at Reedy Creek Church Friday, in the presence of a large gathering of sorrowing friends and relatives. The good wife of the aged man died about 19 years ago.

William was a quiet, law-abiding and valuable citizen in this community. He spent his life in the quiet pursuit of tilling the soil, and no man was his enemy. His face will be missed, but his good deeds will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

buried Kollock, SC in the Gillespie Family Cemetery. Graduate of SC College (Now USC). Younger brother of Thomas Frances Gillespie.

Theodore McFadden Keels was the grandson of John Keels who bought a plantation in Williamsburg County, South Carolina on the Santee River just after the time of the American Revolution. Theodore fought throughout the Civil War with the 7th and was captured at the end by Sherman's army and was paroled with a horse since he was an officer. I personally have his handwritten record and his 2nd Lieutenant's bars (patches) from his uniform.

Died from wounds on 9 December 1864 at Winchester, VA.

Enlisted as a 1st Sergeant on 15 April 1861 at the age of 26.
Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 13 May 1862.
Promoted to Captain on 22 September 1862.
Killed on 6 May 1864 at the Wilderness, VA.

My relative, William Goode Maret, was in Company G of the South Carolina 7th Infantry. He died on 2 December 1862 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. I would very much like to find out if he died during a military action or due to illness or accident. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Richard was 24 years old from Edgefield District SC. He enlisted 15 April 1861 at Aiken, SC. Enlisted and elected 5th Sgt. placed on detached duty working on roads and bridges. 4 July 1861 promoted to 1st Corporal. 13 May 1862 elected to 2nd Lieut. 17 Sep. 1862 wounded at Sharpsburg. March 1863 suffered a gunshot wound to right arm. August 1863 he is on Conscription duty in Edgefield District SC. Suffering from his wounds he was discharged on 19 April 1864 and assigned to the Invalid Corps.
He is the father in law of one of my distant cousins. May the Lord rest his soul.

Joseph was born 31 March 1835 in Edgefield Co. SC. He was 26 years old when he enlisted 1 Jun 1861 at Aiken, SC in Captain Elbert Bland's Co. SC Vols. He mustered on the 4th 150 miles away at Columbia, SC in Co H. His CMR notes Co H 1st and 2nd. The seventh was known as the [The Bloody 7th] because if its losses in battle. They were sent to Va. and arrived to fight in the first battle of Manassas aka Bull Run. He was engaged in some 30 major battles from Manassas to Bentonville, SC. He is hospitalized twice, once for Typhoid Fever and for Measles both in Va. Assigned to Kershaw's Brigade, Early's Division. At Chickamauga the officers killed were Lt. Col Elbert Bland, Major John S Hard and Capt. E.G. Coggins. He has 29 cards in his archival file, a large # for a Pvt. He died 18 Mar 1907 and is buried beside his wife at Kedron Baptist Church Cem. in Aiken, SC. He was the father in law of my 4th cousin 3 x removed.

Born in 1840. Enlisted 15 April 1861 in Edgefield County. Died of Typhoid Fever in Charlottesville, Virginia on 14 April 1862.

Morris Calliham was born in Edgefield County, South Carolina and served with the Company I, 7th Regiment South Carolina Infantry. He died at Spotsylvania, Virginia on May 8, 1864, on the first day of battle. Contact me at bcalliham1@sc.rr.com
