John Hemphill Bigham - 2nd Lieutenant
|
Lieut. John Hemphill Bigham was a son of James and Margaret [née Wylie] Bigham of Sharon, South Carolina. In 1861, John enlisted in Company B, South Carolina 12th Infantry Regiment, as a 1st Lieutenant.
Lieut. Bigham was wounded in the 2nd Battle of Manassas on 30th August 1862. After receiving his wound, by some means, he fell into the hands of the enemy, who kept him a day or two. He was then retaken by the Confederates and placed in a hospital in Warrenton, Virginia. A few days later, Lieut Bigham was attacked with erysipela, a sever bacterial skin infection and died on September 14th 1862, in his 26th year of his age.
Lieut. John Hemphill Bigham's remains were returned home to Sharon and was buried near his father in Sharon A.R.P. Churchyard cemetery. There is a memorial at Warrenton Cemetery in Warrenton, Virginia listing Lieut. Bigham and his fellow brothers in arms, who died after the battle at Manassas.
