Thomas was born 13 June 1840 in Plantersville, Georgetown County South Carolina. He has 57 cards in his archival file. He enlisted 20 Dec 1861 in Captain J Harleston Read's Company which became Co A. Elected to rank of 2nd Lieut. Served in Hagood's Brigade, Hoke's Division. He was 20 years old at enlistment. His early career involved the defense of the Carolina Coast around Charleston. He later fought in Virginia at Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff x 2, Cold Harbor, and Weldon Railroad where he was captured 21 Aug 1864 and sent to Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC and transferred to Point Delaware where he was exchanged 31 Oct 1864. He was captured again 15 Jan 1865 at 2nd battle of Fort Fisher NC and sent to Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Sent to City Point Md. for exchange on 25 Feb 1865. He died 20 June 1915. He is buried at Prince Freddrick Episcopal Church at Plantersville, Georgetown Co. SC. We are related by a distant marriage.

Jesse was born 1 Feb 1830 in Darlington County SC. He was 32 years old when he enlisted at Darlington on 16 May 1862. He had several bouts of illness which found him present but sick in camp. His unit was engaged in most of the big battles of the war and was Captured at Fort Fisher, NC on 15 Jan 1865. He was taken as POW [ wounded in both ankles by gun shot] Moved to USA field hospital at Morehead City, NC discharged and sent via steamer Champion to Fort Monroe, Va. discharged as patient 19 Jan. 1865 and paroled 10 June 1865. He died 7 Aug 1907. He was the husband of my 3rd cousin 2 x removed.

James lied about his age and enlisted as a 17 y/o on 23 Dec. 1861 at Darlington , SC. for 12 months. He mustered in at Georgetown, SC on 1 Jan. 1862. His CMR Company Muster Roll for May-June 1862 noted that he was under age. He was discharged on 1 Jan. 1863 for being a minor. He next appears in Capt. Peterson's Compamy 20th South Carolina Cavalry. He is paid $96.00 for salary and use of horse for Jan - April 1864. The document does not give the location of his company at the time. *Note at this point his records become confused with a Byrd relative that is in several SC Art'y units.

Israel was born 11 Mar 1830 in District 1, Darlington Co. SC. He has 35 cards in his archival file. He enlisted as Pvt. 13 Mar 1863 in Capt. S.H. Wilds Co. for the war. In Aug of 1863 he is sent on detached duty as sub-overseer with the Engineer Dept. Stationed on James Island in St. Andrew's Parish. He was on projects at Holmes House, and Fort Johnson, on 1 may while sick in the hospital he is promoted to 2nd Sgt. Soon thereafter his unit under General Hagood's Brigade is sent to Virginia. Battles: Charleston Harbor, Port Walthall Junction, Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Weldon Railroad, and Fort Fisher where he was captured and taken to Elmira, NY arriving 30 Jan 1865 and released 11 Jul 1865. He died 26 Oct 1879 in Hartsville, Darlington County, SC and is buried in Magnolia Cem. in that town. He was the father-in-law of my 1st cousin 5 x removed. He was described as having a dark complexion, grey hair, hazel eyes and stood 5 foot 10 inches.

They mustered in at Georgetown. James was on detached duty with Hagood's Brigade in the fighting on the Petersburg line. He was captured on 24 June 1864 and held captive at Bermuda Hundred and sent to Fort Monroe and on to Point lookout, Md. On 16 August 1864 he was sent to the POW camp in Elmira NY. He was released after swallowing the Yellow Dog on 3 July 1865.

He entered as Pvt but was promoted to Corporal when mustered at Georgetown on 10 Jan 1862. His archival file is large and has him present in camp sick on two occasions. 12 May 1864 he is wounded by gunshot and admitted to Chimborazo Hosp # 1 at Richmond, Va. Granted a 60 day wounded furlough. He rejoins his unit and fights until the end of the invasion. Battles: Charleston, Port Walthall Junction, Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff x2, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Weldon Rail Road, 2nd battles of Fort Harrison & Fort Fisher, Carolina Campaign & finally Bentonville. James married x 3 and died 26 May 1894 at Cheraw, SC. Buried at that town in Old Saint Davids Episcopal Ch. His sacrifice for his homeland is not forgotten. We are related by a distant marriage.

Chapman was born May 1844 in Camden, Kershaw Co. SC. He enlisted at Cheraw, Chesterfield Co. SC on 20 Dec 1861 at age 15 in Capt. M.G. Tarrh's Company SC. Vol's. The unit mustered on 10 Jan 1862 at Georgetown, SC. He had some adjustment problems and was court marshaled and fined 1/2 months pay. In Aug 1863 he is on detached duty as sharp shooter. Captured 15 Jan 1865 at Fort Fisher, NC and sent to Elmira, NY where he arrived 30 Jan 1865. He took the oath aka [ swallowed the yellow dog] and was released 11 July 1865. His Company fought at Charleston. Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff,Va. Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Weldon Rail Road, 2nd Fort Harrison & 2nd Fort Fisher where he was captured. He was the Father in Law of my 3rd cousin 2 x removed.

Charles was born in New York state in 1844. His family migrated to Cheraw, Chesterfield County SC when he was about 6 years old. He enlisted 20 Dec 1861 in Capt M. G. Tarrh's Co 21st Regt. SC Vols. This became Co D Hagood's Brigade. On 5 April 1862 he is appointed Corporal. He is dogged by sickness. 30 April 1862 he is appointed as 5th Sergeant. 15 June 1864 he is admitted to Episcopal Church Hospital at Williamsburg, Va for gunshot wound. He is sent home on wounded furlough. He is captured there and sent to Harts Island POW camp in New York Harbor. He took the oath [ Swallowed the Yellow Dog] on 14 June 1865 and died three days later on 17 June 1865 on Harts Island of Chronic Diarrhoea. He was buried there and was moved later to Cypress Hills Cem. Brooklyn , Kings Co. NY. He enlisted at age 18. He is the brother in law of my 2nd cousin 4 x removed.

William Alexander Turnage - Private |

Private Wm. Alexander Turnage enlisted in the 21st Regiment Company D in Chesterfield, SC on 10 May 1862. This Regiment defended the SC coast from 1862-1864. The 21st became part of Hagood's Brigade along with the 11th, 25th, 27th South Carolina Regiments; this Brigade served gallantly at Morris Island and Battery Wagner during General Gillmore's siege of Charleston in 1863. In April 1864, Hagood's Brigade was ordered to Virginia to meet General Grant's army in his Overland Campaign. Turnage was wounded at Morris Island and at Cold Harbor Virginia; he was hospitalized several times in Richmond area hospitals for sicknesses as well. Ironically, Turnage was captured near his home in Chesterfield SC after a skirmish at Big Black Creek SC on 2 March 1865 by an Illinois regiment during Sherman's march through S. C.; he was sent to Point Lookout Md.and was a POW until 21 June 1865, 2 months after the end of the war. Turnage made it home and continued farming in Chesterfield until his death on 26 March 1916.

Mustered at Georgetown, SC 10 Jan 1862. He was captured at Morris Island, Charleston on 10 July 1863. He was wounded [ gunshot wounds in both ankles] Taken aboard Steamer Cosmopolitan and taken to Union Gen. Hospital on Morris Island. Exchanged 23 July 1863. He recovered and rejoined his Company. In Nov 1864 he is suffering from chronic diaroheea and is in 1st Division Jackson Hosp. at Richmond, Va. Fought at Charleston, Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbour, Petersburg Siege, Weldon Rail Road, Fort's Harrison and Fisher, Carolina Campaign and the final battle at Bentonville, NC. We are related by marriage. He married twice and died 15 June 1916. He is buried at LDS Cem. Society Hill, Darlington Co. SC

Joseph was born in 1824 in Chesterfield Co SC. He joined at Chesterfield on 1 Jan 1862. He was sick in camp and was sent home to recover with surgeons certificate. Was captured at Fort Fisher NC and sent to Elmira, NY. He was paroled 2 Mar 1865 after'Swallowing the Yellow Dog'. He then returned home to suffer another 10 years of brutal Northern military occupation. The north called it reconstruction and the south knew it as continued destruction. We finally got rid of the pest in 1877.

His wife and two slaves made the trip to Richmond to claim his body. I located his wife's grave at Campbell Cemetery on the Hartsville - Rubt Hwy in SC. He has no marker but I believe he is buried beside his wife. UPDATE 20 NOV 2019 -Have completed the paper work on his gravestone application and it was approved. The stone will be placed by the "First In Secession Camp in Chesterfield Co. SC. in 45 to 60 days from this notice..

He was present at all the battles fought by his unit. He suffered severe medical problems and was hospitalized three times. The last of which was severe diarrhoea and sent on a 30 day sick furlough 3 Aug 1864. He was serving with Hagood's Brigade. He died in 1891 in Alligator Township, Chesterfield Co SC. John suffered from rheumatism and was given a medical discharge for same on 18 Jan 1863 at Morris Island, Charleston Harbor. He at some time rejoined his regiment as he is found in the hospital at Summerville, SC 31 Dec 1863. He moved with his regiment to Virginia where he is captured near Petersburg 24 June 1864. He is held as POW at Fort Monroe and then transferred to Elmira, NY. He married Templelton Rebecca Jane Smith. They are buried at Antioch Methodist Church in Hornsboro, Chesterfield Co. SC. We are related by a distant marriage.

He re-enlisted 8 Jan 1862. He suffered a gunshot wound on 18 June 1864. 21 Aug 1864 he is reported as captured at Weldon railroad and was reported as being in the hands of the enemy. John was born 31 Dec 1829 in Marlboro Co. SC. He has 18 items in his archival file. Enlisted by Capt. Thomas at Bennettsville 1 March 1863. He was mustered at Georgetown and assigned to Charleston Harbor. Assigned to Hagood's, Brigade. Fought at Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg where he was captured on 18 June 1864. He was sent to Elmira arriving 30 Julu 1864. There is a CMR stating that he was moved to Point Lookout for exchange March 1865. However, on 6 March 1865 he is found in Jackson Hosp at Richmond being treated for Rheumatism. It is noted that he is a paroled prisoner. On 14 March 1865 he is paid $179.13 cents for service from 1 Jan 1864 - 31 Dec 1864 and sent on a 60-day furlough. He died 20 Jan 1905 and is buried in the Bright Cem. Marlboro Co. SC. We share no blood but are connected thru a distant marriage.

Rev. John Alexander William Thomas was a preacher of the gospel. He answered the call to defend his homeland from the invaders by forming his own Company. On 25 Dec. 1861 at Bennetsville, Marlboro Co SC he formed Capt. J.A W. Thomas' Co, 21 SC Vols' This became Co F. 21st Regiment SC Infantry. It mustered in at Georgetown, SC on 10 January 1862. Assigned to Hagood's Brigade, Hoke's Division it saw hard fighting thru out the entire war. Capt Thomas was wounded by gunfire that struck his left forearm. He was grantned a 30 day furlough and was a patient in the hospital at Florence SC. In late 1865 he was signing as Regimental Co for Co's K and L.
He survived the war and resumed his church and civic duties. He died 27 April 1894 and is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Bennettsville, Marlboro Co. SC

He sustained a gunshot wound to his right sholder. was hospitalized on the Union Hospital ship Cosmopolitan. He was exchanged on 24 July at Hilton Head. He was captured at Fort Fisher and died at Elmira NY of diarrhea. Many Prisoners died of deliberate malnutrition because of the harsh treatment of prisoners by Gen. William Hoffman. Gen. Hoffman bragged that he had killed more rebels than most front line units. He is buried at Elmira in grave # 2554

John has 12 cards in his archival file, several list illness. In Feb 1865 he is absent and listed as wounded from his company. He is retired as disabled on 9 Nov 1864 and is assigned to the Invalid Corps. He dies early in 1876 from complication of injuries. He saw action with the 21st SC Infantry at Charleston Harbor until the spring of 1864 when sent to Va. Battles; Port Walthall Junction, Swift Creek, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Seige, Weldon RR, 2nd Fort Harrison & 2nd Fort Fisher. He may have been wounded during this time.

He suffered a broken lower Jaw. He survived the war.

Wiley enlisted first at Darlington, SC in Capt. E. C. Stockton's Co 21st Reg. SC Vol's. He was 29 years old. His unit became Co G. 21st SC Inf. Regt and mustered in on 16 Jan. at Georgetown, SC. Wiley became very ill and was diagnosied with Consumption. His attending physician said he had little chance of recovery. He was discharged by order of Brig. Gen. Ripley on 17 Dec. 1862. Wiley went home and recovered somewhat and reenlisted at Chesterfield, SC on 3 Sept. 1863, in his old unit. Wiley's medical condition continued to trouble him and he was often sick. He is now with Hagood's Brigade at Richmond Va. where he is wounded in the right eye by a mini ball and sent home on a 40 day furlough.

I'm looking for any information on John E. Hall of Co.G of the 21st S.C. Infantry. He enlisted in summer of 1862 in Charleston, S.C. and stated that his commanding officer was Capt.R.W.Reddy. This would put him in the Williams Guards of Hobgoods Brigade. He ended up married to Annie Spicer in Louisa, Virginia in 1866. I haven't been able to find out anything on his war record on any roster, however, I have his Confederate pension record from the state of Virginia and his marriage and death records also. He was born in the Darlington area of John Hall and Martha Lewis and he did state that his two closest comrades in Co.G were James Booth and James Hunter. He also mentions Col.Graham and Lt.Col.Dargan as the 21st S.C. commanding officers. If anyone has any information on him I would be very appreciative because he is my great,great,grandfather and I have no other information on him previous to his settlement in Virginia. Thanks in advance for any leads.

He was engaged in Charleston Harbour Battle & April 1863, and second battle in Aug-Sept 1863, Port Walthall Junction 6 May 1864,Swift Creek, 9 May 1864, Drerys Bluff 12 and 16 May 1864, Cold Harbour Va. 1-3 June 1864, Petersburg Siege June-April 1965 and Weldon Railroad Junction 21 Aug 1864. He was captured at Weldon and his records reflect that he was in the hands of the enemy since 21 Aug, 1864. As a side note I had another of my relatives killed in the battle at Weldon Railroad Junction. That was James Thomas who was with Co. E. 52nd NC Infantry.

He enlisted June 1861 - Company L, 21st Regiment Infantry. He was made Sergeant and was wounded. He was discharged from the service at Appomattox, VA on the 9th of April 1865.
He married Mary Caroline Phillips one month later on the 10th of May, 1865

According to William's pension application:
In 1862 - he was shot in the head at Sharpsburg; May 1864 - leg wound;
June 1864 - shoulder wound;
August 1864 - broken arm, two balls through right arm, bullet through neck, arm now useless.
General health - fair.
Page 574 of Seller's History of Marion County writes the following about William:
'Company L, 21st Regiment Infantry SC Volunteers
Wounded 10 times - The Crater, by shell: Davis' Farm, six times in succession; Sharpsburg, skull fractured; Virginia, in left leg: Virginia by shell-disabled.'
I don't have a date of death yet for William. I know he was still alive in October of 1919.

Jesse was born in North Little Rock, Dillon District, Marlboro Co. SC. in 1821 He enlisted 16 Nov 1863 by Capt Craig in nearby Marion, Marion District SC. His Regiment was assigned to General Hagood's Brigade. He suffered from chronic diarrhea. Record reveal he is given two sick furloughs 23 July 1864 and 21 Sep. 1864. He never recovered his health and died age 54. Buried in Timothy Rogers Cem. Dillon, Dillon Co. SC. We are distantly related by marriage.

Augustus is my second cousin three times removed. He was the son of Martha Ann Gerald and Andrew Coke White.
Augustus was promoted from ranks to Corporal, Company L, 21st Regiment Infantry SC Volunteers, in the Confederate States Provisional Army. He was wounded at Morris Island on July 10, 1863 and died later that month in Charleston.
He was only seventeen years old.
