2nd Tennessee Cavalry (Smith's)
Company E
Thomas Jefferson Draper - Private
Thomas was born 29 Jun 1838 in Bagdad, Jackson Co Tenn. Note for clarification: I have found 3 CSA regiments designated as the 2nd Tenn. Cav. 1. Ashby, 2. Smith, 3. Col. Clark Barteau's. Then there is that Yankee bunch of traitors. The regimental record of Barteau's has no official history. The scant info I have found is as follows [ The 2nd Tenn Cav was a cavalry regiment of the CSA. Its origins are somewhat murky, but was formed in 1862, but was unknown to the Richmond Govt. until the following year due to the vagaries of military and civil politics. It was under the command of Col. Clark Barteau by 1864, when it participated in the attack on Fort Pillow.] Thomas in his application for pension stated as did two of his witnesses that they served under the aforesaid commander. Late in the war Thomas became dismounted and was sent on detached duty by Col. C.R. Debo and Capt. William H Debo to go to Tenn and find a remount. While there the war ended, and he did not return. He surrendered at McMinville, Tenn. His pension # 28528 filed 1 June 1914 from Farmers Branch, Dallas Co. Texas was approved. He died 5 May 1926 in the Confederate Home for old soldiers in Dallas Co. Texas. He was my distant cousin. May God rest his soul.
