Joseph Mesiah JarrellRank Unknown
He was my great, great grandfather of whom I am writing a book about. He was from Bedford County, Shelbyville, enlisted as a private Co. A, 8/15/1863 promoted to sgt. mustered out 8/19/1965. Died of Intestine troubles in the 1880's he claimed were a result of the war. He received a union pension and so did his 2nd wife's children til age 16 of which my paternal great grandmother was one Mae Blanche Jarrell Moore, Circa 1885-1941. Joseph's brother Andrew J. Jarrell also joined company A, at the same time, age 19 yrs. old. He was the famous Vanderbilt Univeristy writer's grandfather Randall Jarrell (Professor) who died in 1965 (my cousin). Joseph M.Jarrell was a carpenter in Antioch and Later Shelbyville, Tn. First wife was Mary Ann Sinpson who died during the war, 2nd wife was Sarah Marinda Gregory (My great, great grandmother), and both unions produced 12 children. The younger children were raised in foster care in Middle Tennessee after Joseph and Sarah's death's in the mid 1880's.

John Houston Cunningham - Private
My great-great grandfather, John Houston Cunningham (2/27/1837--4/19/1922), enlisted Nov. 1, 1864 at Lebanon, TN. He was mustered into service Dec. 14th at Carthage, TN. His enlistment papers describe him as 27-years old, 5-feet 8-inches tall, blue eyes, with a 'florid' complexion. He received an enlistment bonus of $100, another $100 for bringing his horse, and an additional $100 for supplying the 'horse equipment.'

At the time of his enlistment he was married and had three children. He served until the end of the war and returned to his farm in Wilson County.

The Regimental Books for the 4th Tennessee Mounted Infantry show that the soldiers were issued Gallagher Carbines, and Smith Carbines.

Joseph Alexander Cunningham (1/25/1839--2/3/1918) was my great-great uncle, and the younger brother of John Houston Cunningham. Joseph joined Co. H on January 1, 1865 at Carthage, Tennessee. At the time of his enlistment he was married and had two children, with another on the way. At the end of the war he returned to his farm in Wilson County.

Martin is my 2nd great grandfather. Two of his great grandfathers (James Hart and John Rainey were served in the Revolutionary War for South Carolina. His grandfather, Henry Hart, served in the War of 1812.

Dison J Raper - Corporal
Dison J Raper enlisted in 1861 Monroe Tennessee. He was run through at the Battle of Champion Hill.At Big Black River.He along with a total of 1700 fellow Confederate's were captured by Grant's Union Army.They were stranded and left behind as a result of his fellow retreating confederate solders Burned the two bridges behind themselves leaving all remaining to be captured or killed.
Dison was run through on May 17th 1863. Although still alive he along with other fellow solders were taken as POW to Ft Delaware in New Jersey. This was both a prison and Hospital.
Dison died as result of his wounds a short time later. It was estimated according to union records Dison died on Jun 15th 1863. He is buried in a mass Grave on Pea patch Island.There is a monument with a list of all buried there.
