William Brimage Bate, William B

Enlisted as PVT in 2nd Tennessee , elected Colonel, Promoted to Brigadier in command of Tennessee Brigade in 1863, after battle of Chicamauga promoted to Major General and commanded division in Hardees Corps, CSA at Atlanta. Staggerin losses at Dallas Georgia due to failure of staff officer to cancel attack. Division was involved in Attack at Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, Ezra Church and Division Cited by Corps Commander for action at Utoy Creek Ga in repelling attack of XXIII and XIV Corps. Bate wounded by sharpshooter while inspecting lines on 10 Aug 1864 along Utoy Creek West of East Point. Recouperated in Barnsville, GA until recalled by Hood for invasion of Tennessee. His Division due to conflicting orders failed to close the road surrounding Schofields XXIII Corps at Spring Hill. His Division attacked their former foe from Utoy Creek XXIII Corps at Franklin. Failed to carry works. MG Bate later commanded division moved to North Carolina against Sherman. Surrendered at Bentonville, NC. Later elected Govenor and Senator from Tennessee. Nickname 'Old Grits' Wounded Four times during the war.

His brothers, George D.A. McKnight (my great great grandfather) and Samuel McKnight moved to Texas in the 1850s. James was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga, 1863.

An uncle, Rufus Loyd enlisted in Co. D of the 2nd Tenn. Infantry in his home community of Bell Buckle, Bedford Co, Tenn. early in 1861 at the age of 28.
Was on detached service, employed as a 'pioneer' in April 1864.
Survived the war, paroled at Meridian, Miss. in May 1865.

Thomas was born in Tenn. 25 Dec 1837 probably in Sumner County. The 1860 census finds him in District 14 of that county at the age of 22 the PO is at Gallatin. He enlists at Hartsville Tennessee on 14 May 1861 in Capt. William G Henry's Company 2nd Regt. Vols [Walkers Legion] The officers were Colonel's William B Bate & William D Robison. He is appointed at Forage / Wagon master for the Regiment and serves in that capacity for the war. His last fight was at Bentonville. NC. the regiment surrendered at Durham, NC and "Swallowed the Yellow Dog".
Thomas died 7 Jan 1882 and is buried at Friendship Cem. Trousdale Co. Tenn. He was the father--in-law of my 4th cousin 3x removed.

Regimental Assignments: J.G. Walker's & French's Brigade attached to Cleburne's, L.E. Polk's, Tyler's, and Palmer's Brigade. The roster of this regiment contains the names of 1168 men.

Historical notes: The 2nd was organized in May 1861, at Nashville and mustered into Confederate service at Lynchburg, Va. Members were recruited from Rutherford, Maury, Davidson, Bedford, Trousdale, Shelby, & Sumner Counties. Fought at Aquia Creek, and First Manassas. In Feb 1862, returned to Tennessee. After fighting at Shiloh, Richmond and Perryville, the regiment was in the fight from Murfreesboro to Atlanta and then back with Hood into Tennessee. Then the Carolina Campaign with the last battle at Bentonville. It lost 37 % of the 300 at Richmond, had 4 killed and 59 wounded at Murfreesboro, and of the 264 engaged at Chickamauga, more than 60% were disabled. In Dec of 1862 the unit totaled 262 men with only 146 arms. Had 133 in action at Ringgold Ga. and could only muster 65 after the battle of Nashville. There were few left to surrender.
