The only record the family has is that he was wounded in battle @ Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1862 and died as a result of them. We are told that he joined the 19th Tennessee Infantry, and held the rank of Major @ his death. Any information concerning his service and the possible location of his burial would be most appreciated by the family.

I believe this Confederate was my maternal gr,gr,grandfather. The CMSR contains only the ' index card ' with his name, Company, & Regiment. I believe John was probably conscripted ( drafted ) into the Confederate Army about the same time as his brother-in-law, Elijah Hashbarger, listed on this page. He was 'captured July 3, 1863 at Cowan, Tenn.' The CMSR also states ' due to be released at Louisville, Ky. ' John may have been captured by elements of the Union 1st Tenn Cav that was made up of Unionists from upper East Tenn and that he may have been acquainted with. Family tradition and oral history says he '' never returned to the Confederate Army and had several run-ins with the Confederate home guard, one of which resulted in a half-hearted attempt to hang him.

With all the debates about ' Black Confederates ' I found this interesting mainly because this man was from my home county and lived near several of my ancestors / relatives. In the 1860 census of Sullivan County, Tennessee. Wiley is listed as 15 year-old free ' mulatto. ' A ' farmhand ' on a rather large farm. He is shown enlisting as a private in company G 19th Tennessee infantry at Knoxville ( another record says Zollicoffer, TN which would have been considerably closer and in Sullivan Co ) He enlists April 8, 1863 which leads me to believe he was conscripted. He is ' present ' and on the rolls through Nov.12, 1863 when he is sent to the hospital. One would assume he fought with the regiment at Chickamauga where the 19th did some hard fighting. He is last paid while hospitalized Jan.25, 1864. He then disappears from the rolls.
He is then found present on the rolls for the 4th Tennessee Infantry ( Union ) Co. C from March-August 1864. Wiley then deserted Uncle Sam August 20, 1864 at Kingston, Tenn. He soon returned by a certain date and was restored to service by Jan. 1865. Wiley lived till 1922 and drew a Federal pension for his service :
