William Jasper Houston

Regarding William Jasper Houston, some information has come to bear, which may indicate that he was a member of the 48th Virginia before enlisting or being conscripted into the 29th Tennessee. A William J. Houston, 23, laborer is found in 1860 at Seven Mile Ford, Smyth County, Virginia with the Oury family. Ancestry.com lists a William J. Houston, 23, laborer, as enlisting from Smyth Co., Seven Mile Ford with Co. D 48th Virginia Confederate Infantry on 18 May 1861. He was detailed on 30 April 1862 as a teamster.

My William Jasper Houston was born 28 May 1838 likely in or near Washington County, Virginia. He is listed in the 1850 Smyth County Virginia census with his parents and sister, Nancy Jane, and living in the same district as the Oury family. William Jasper Houston married Margaret Ann Fox in Claiborne County, Tennessee on 16 September 1857. His parent’s, James R. and Martha Ann Buchanan, moved to Union County, Tennessee sometime between 1850 and 1860. They are in Union County in 1860 and are in Claiborne County in the 1870 and 1880 census. William Jasper Houston and Margaret Ann Fox had a daughter, Margaret Ann Houston who was born 13 June 1858 in Grainger County, Tennessee. In 1859 William Jasper Houston’s wife died of causes unknown at this time.

In 1860 Margaret Ann Houston is found with her maternal grandparents, Abraham Fox and Elizabeth Goodman, in Claiborne County. Her father, William Jasper Houston, has not been found in any Tennessee census records as of yet. In 1850 Abraham Fox, William Jasper Houston’s father-in-law, is living beside the same Oury family where we find the William J. Houston that may have joined the 48th Virginia. This indicates that there was some connection at least between the Fox family and the William J. Houston that lived with the Oury family in 1860. They knew each other.

The records of the William J. Houston who joined the 48th do not indicate how long he stayed with this regiment, but did list him as being a “teamster” in 1862. My William Jasper Houston joined the 29th Tennessee Confederate Infantry on 5 January 1863. According to his enlistment papers he was enlisted by Captain Fulkerson for a period of 3 years. He was never paid. For the period January and February his 'Name appears in Column of names present as Wm. Jasper Houston.' He was listed as present by Captain Pilcher from January 1863 through October. Remarks for November and December say: 'Killed in skirmish near Chattanooga, Tennessee November 23, 1863.” It is unclear at this time exactly where his regiment was on the 23rd. The regimental history of the 29th states the following:

In the Battle of Chickamauga, September 19-20, 1863, the 29th, under Colonel Rice, reported the expenditure of 10,600 rounds of ammunition, and suffered 71 casualties. It moved to Sweetwater on October 19, but returned to Missionary Ridge November 9. On November 20, 1863, Vaughn’s Brigade was transferred to Major General T. C. Hindman's Division for a few months, and was engaged in the Battle of Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863. Hindman’s Division consisted of Anderson’s Brigade, Manigault’s Brigade, Dea’s Brigade, Vaughn’s Brigade, and an Artillery Battalion under Major Alfred R. Courtney. On February 20, 1864, it was returned to Cheatham's Division, where it remained for the duration (On 23 November 1863 Hindman’s Division held the right of the Confederate line facing Chattanooga at the base of Missionary Ridge. The line was thrown sufficiently forward from the base to give room for the camps. Deas' Brigade had Vaughan's on its right and Manigault's on its left. Vaughan's Brigade consisted of the 11th Tennessee, Col. George W. Gordon, the 12th and 47th Tennessee, Col. William M. Watkins, the 13th and 154th Tennessee, Lieut. Col. R. W. Pitman, and the 29th Tennessee, Col. Horace Rice )

I think that perhaps my William Jasper Houston returned to Smyth County, Virginia after the death of his wife, Margaret Ann Fox Houston, and went to work for the Oury family. The war broke out in April of 1861, he joined the 48th Virginia, served his term or deserted, and then returned to Claiborne County to be with his daughter. Perhaps he was upset at the death of his brother-in-law, Levi Heron, who died of fever while serving with Co. K, 63rd Virginia Confederate Infantry. He then either joined the 29th Tennessee or was conscripted into service. He never returned home and his place of burial is unknown as well. The following email from John Chapla, a historian for the 48th Virginia, may explain or verify my conclusions about William Jasper Houston.

Joe,
After all these years, I didn't think you'd be at the same e-mail. Glad to get back to you. I am not kin to William Jasper Houston, but have an interest in him because a man by that name was a member of the 48th Virginia. You wanted to know if there was a link between the William Jasper Houston in the 48th and a man by the same name in the 29th Tenn. I have continued to collect information on the 48th, to include reviewing Civil War era newspapers. I found this info below in an announcement, 'Absent Without Leave,' published in the Abingdon Virginian on 20 March 1863. Capt. R.H. Dungan, commander of D/48Va, offered a reward of $80 for the return of each of three men from his company who were AWOL. About William Jasper Houston, Dungan wrote: 'Houston's whereabouts is unknown. His parents live in Tennessee.' A reward of $30 was offered for Houston's delivery 'to any military post.' (48Va: 53, 1863/03/20) This may be the link you are looking for. At least we know now that the Houston of the 48th had the opportunity in 1863 to join another unit, and that he was linked to Tennessee by his parents; more likely parents-in-law. What we don't have is why Houston would leave one active regiment, the 48th, to join another active one, the 29th Tennessee, and risk severe punishment. What was the motivation for the move?

Absent Without Leave

PRIVATES Amos Cross and James A. Settle, of my Company, are absent without leave. The former is home in Smyth County, Virginia; the latter, I understand, is a fireman of a freight train on the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad. Also William Jasper Houston is absent without leave, but his whereabouts is unknown. His parents live in Tennessee. A reward of $80 will be given for each, if delivered at any military post. R.H. Dungan, Captain, Co. D, 48th Regiment Virginia Infantry. 20 March 1863-Abingdon Virginian.

Wells (13th Tennesse Cavalry), William Wells (12th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry), Julius T. Wells (4th Tennessee Infantry) and Francis M. Wells (28th Battalion Georgia Siege Artillery). There is very little known about Charles H. because he died in 1865 at the age of 30. William S. Wells was shot in his bed by Union soldiers who were celebrating the winning of the war in June of 1865 and fired into his home not knowing he was sick in bed at the time and died as a result. Susan A. Wells never re-married and died in Springfield, MO in 1895.
