Company G
Helton Rutherford Walker - Captain
Helton Rutherford Walker enlisted in November 1861 and was mustered in the following month. He was taken prisoner at Fort Donelson in February 1862, and spent 7 months in Camp Douglas prison camp, in Chicago. He was exchanged in September 1862, and was shortly thereafter elected Captain of Company G by the men he was imprisoned with. They were reorganized into a second 48th Tenn, under Colonel Voorhies. He served until the close of the war, and was still with his unit at the Battle of Bentonville, NC on 19 March 1964 (his performance in this battle was praised by General Johnston), and at the final surrender in April 1865. He returned home to Hickman County, Tennessee, where he is found in the Pinewood area at the time of the 1870 census. In the spring of 1872 he moved his family to Howell County, Missouri, where he homesteaded, and donated the land for Walker's Chapel Church and Cemetery, where his descendants and others gather every Memorial weekend.
