Daniel Porter StoryRank Unknown
enlisted at Campbellsvile, Giles Co., TN in 53rd TN Infantry lead by Alford H. Abernathy. Daniel did not surrender at Fort Donelson on Feb 16, 1862, he was at home sick with the measels. He rejoined in fall of 1862 and died of chronic diarrhea or consumsption at a hospital in West Point, Mississippi in 1863.

Per John William Story on February 17, 1909:
James Henry enlisted at Campbellsvile, Giles Co., TN in Col Alford H. Abernathy's 53rd TN Infantry and organized by Capt. Jim Rittenbury. James did not surrender at Fort Donelson on Feb 16, 1862, he was (along with his brother Daniel) at home with measles. James had two sunstrokes in Army on forced marches which cripled him up seriously. Came in with Hood's raid Nov. 1864 but did not go out.

on Feb 17, 1909 John gives this account. John W. Story of East 9th Street, Columbia, TN. Capt. Jim Rittenbury organized a company at Cambellsville, Giles Co., TN which was in Col. Alford Abernathy's 53rd TN Infantry. 1st Lt. was John Clint Hanna. Other members of Capt. Rittenbury's company of which he recalls (other than his brothers Daniel and James) were: Jake Yokley, Milton E. Alexander (later Capt.) and George Washington Cameron.

William H. Tungett - 1st Lieutenant
Lt. Tungett was born in Giles County 7 OCT 1835 to Linsey Tungett and Melissa Foulks. Before the war he was overseer on the Eliza Clayton Plantation. Lt. Tungett was captured at Ft. Donelson , was a P.O.W. at Johnson Island in Sandusky , Ohio.
After the prisoner exchange in Vicksburg , Miss. he returned to Pulaski. He married Harriet G. Pentecost in 1864and they had a daughter named Elouie/Eloise who was born in 1865. Harriet died in 1875 and Lt. Tungett married Lavina Jane Ezell in 1878. Lt. Tungett died 15 DEC 1892 in Pulaski and is buried in the Maplewood Cemetery old white section.

Jacob was born in1828 in Pulaski, Giles Co. Tenn. In 1860 he is found on the census in that county at age 32. The PO is at Bradshaw. He has 17 cards in his archival file. He has serval family members in this regiment. He enlisted 13 Dec 1861 in Co C whose CO was Capt. Alfred H Abernathy.
He was captured 16 Feb 1862 at Fort Donalson and sent to Camp Morton where he swallowed the yellow dog and was released 21 Aug 1862 at Vicksburg. He rejoined his regiment which had been decimated by disease. Was assigned to Gen. Maxey's Brigade which was stationed at Port Huron La. he them moved to Mobile. His regiment again entered the fight when they moved North and became part of the Atlanta Campaign. Fought at Chattanooga, Ringgold, Dalton, Franklin, Nashville and at New Hope Church which was fought 25 /26 May 1864 where he was captured near that place on 5 June 1864. This was in Paulding Co. Ga. He is sent to Point Lookout for exchange 15 Feb 1865. He is buried at Santa Fe Cem, Santa Fe, Maury Co. Tenn. He is the father-in-law of my cousin.

Hiram W Webb - Private
Hiram was born in Lauderdale County Alabama 20 Nov 1839. He has 16 items in his archival file. The 1860 census finds him in District 9, Lawrence Co. Tenn. He enlists in Capt. Thomas F. Winston's Co. 53rd Tenn Infantry which becomes Co D. He enlisted 1 Jan 1862 with his brother Ozias Denton. After Ozias was wounded at Fort Donalson, he transferred to Co C to be with his brother Jacob. After Fort Donalson where he was captured, he was sent to Vicksburg for exchange. Then the depleted regiment was assigned to Gen Maxey in the Miss. East La. Dept and stationed at Port Hudson and then at Mobile. In the spring of 1864, the regiment is back in the fight at Nashville, Franklin Dalton and New Hope Church Georgia where he is again captured and sent to Louisville, Ky and on to Rock Island Illinois. He swallowed the Yellow Dog and was released 20 May 1865. My 3rd cousin 5 x removed. He married Sarah E Rogers in 1867. They are buried in McCains Cumberland Presbyterian Church. McCains, Maury County. Tenn.

Ozias Denton Webb - Private
Ozias was born in 1834 in Pulaski, Giles Co. Tenn. He enlisted 1 January 1862 in Capt. Thomas F. Winston's Co. 53rd Tenn Infantry. They mustered at Nashville. He has 3 cards in his archival file. He is wounded in the battle of Fort Donalson and sent to Clarksville, Tenn. It cannot be proven but I suspect he rejoined his regiment and fought until the end of the war, His commander Capt. Winston was promoted to Col. and was one of the officers that survived and surrendered on 26 April 1865. He was my 3rd cousin 5 x removed He died 1 Jan 1891. I have not located his grave.

George Washington Moore - 1st Lieutenant
George is my 2GGrandfather. George Washington Moore enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 53rd Tennessee Infantry and arrived at Fort Donelson, TN on December 10, 1861. He was made a POW on February 16, 1862. He was sent to Johnson's Island POW camp in Sandusky, OH. He was subsequently sent to the POW camp at Camp Chase, OH on May 27, 1862. He was formally exchanged on September 11, 1862 at Vicksburg, MS. He rejoined his unit and was elected 1LT on September 26, 1862. He was captured again shortly after the Battle of New Hope Church, GA on June 5, 1864 and was again sent to Johnson's Island POW camp. He was paroled on June 15, 1865 after swearing a loyalty oath.

My grandfather served in the 53rd Tn Inf from Dec 1861, until
his capture at Big Shanty, Ga. on June 15, 1864.However, He
served in Co.'C' 48th Tenn Inf, from April 1862-Dec 1862.
With the 53rd he saw action at Port Hudson,La, but was not captured at either Port Hudson or Vicksburg although the 53rd was listed as captured at BOTH places. He suffered sunstroke
near Big Black River, Miss, on July 6, 1863 and was hospitalized at Demopolis, Ala for 6 months.
He was never wounded, but suffered greatly as a prisioner at
Rock Island, Ill or Camp Douglas, Ill(or both places), He refused to take the oath of allegiance. He lived until 1903
and is buried near Rockvale, Rutherford County, Tennessee.

Family story states his brother-in-law, told Yankees where he was hiding and was captured again on Nov 20, 1863. Was held in Nashville and sent to military prison in Louisville KY and later to Rock Island IL December 13, 1863. Camp later gained reputation of being a northern 'Andersonville'. Took oath of allegiance to the US and released May 21, 1865.

Elisha F Keltner - Sergeant
Captured at the Battle of Fort Donelson on 16 February 1862 and sent to Camp Morton in Indianapolis, IN. He died in the camp on 2 June 1862. A second date of death has been listed, however most records favor the 2 June date. He was just 21 years old. Initially interred at Green Lawn Cemetery in Indianapolis. Around 1933, his remains and those of the other Confederates were disinterred and reinterred in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, which is situated in a corner of the Crown hill National Cemetery, The Confederates were reburied into a mass grave.
