Company C
William James Hannah - 2nd Lieutenant
Continued from 54th Tenn. Infantry: William after escaping the fall of Fort Donalson on 16 Feb 1862 was enlisted in the 48th Tenn. [Nixon's] which had also been badly mauled in combat. He has 21 items in his archival file. The regimental history states that they were active in the Kentucky Campaign in which he suffered a chest injury at the battle of Richmond, Kentucky. The regimental history also stated it was involved in the Atlanta Campaign and Hood's Tenn. Campaign as well as the Carolina Campaign. There is a bit of a mystery as his archival record says he was captured 20 April at Macon, Georgia. He was the father-in-law of the step grandson, of my 1st cousin 4 x removed Willie Susan Robinson. He is buried at Waxahachie City Cem. Ellis Co. Texas.

Company G
Helton Rutherford Walker - Captain
Helton Rutherford Walker enlisted in the 48th TN in Nov 1861, and was one of the few men still with the 48th at the final surrender after the Battle of Bentonville in NC. He was in Co D of thte 48th as a private, and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Fort Donelson. He was held, with numerous others of his regiment, at Camp Douglas in Illinois as a prisoner of war. In Sept 1862 they were exchanged and returned to active Confederate duty. When that portion of the 48th TN reorganized, he was elected Captain of Co G, under Corporal Voorhies. From this time there were essentially two regiments of the 48th: the one under Nixon (those not taken at Donelson), and the one under Voorhies (reorganized after release from prison camp. Helton Rutherford Walker was the son of Elijah Walker and Matilda McMurry, of Dickson County TN. He married Esther Elizabeth Thornton of Hickman Co TN, and enlisted from Hickman County. After the war, Helton Rutherford Walker and Esther Elizabeth (Thornthon) Walker moved to Howell Co MO (1872), where they remained and raised their family. They homesteaded near Mountain View, MO, and donated the ground for Walker Chapel Church and Cemetery from their homestead. The church, while not active continues to be well-maintained, and hosts a homecoming each year. Descendants of Helton Rutherford Walker continue to be buried in its little cemetery.
