This is my great-great grandfather. He enlisted in Whitesboro, TX on July 17, 1862 after a 16 mile ride. He was mustered-in by Captain S.B. Savage. This unit was later reorganized into the 5th Regiment Texas Partisan Rangers and was primarily engaged in operations in Indian Territory.

Joseph DeKalb Mathis

Joseph DeKalb Mathis was born 11 JUL 1839 in Hardeman Co., Tennesse the son of William B. Mathis (1808-1867) and Martha Ann Fowler(1819-1847). He married Martha Jane Gaston 30 March 1865 in Upshur County, Texas where they lived the remainder of their lives and they had 10 children. He later married M. Elizabeth Steelman and had one daughter, J.D. Mathis. He died 24 Nov 1905 and is buried at Hopewell Cemetery in Western Upshur County, Texas. He served in Company D with his father William B. Mathis as his Sgt. and 2 brothers William Nicholas Mathis & Jacob Lewis Mathis.

William B. Mathis was a teacher by avocation. He was born 20 MAY 1808 in Washington County, Georgia, the son of Lewis Mathis(1775-1834) and Lurannah Brantley(1779-1849). He married Martha Ann Fowler 10 Jul 1834 in Hardeman County, Tennessee and they had 4 children including Joseph DeKalb Mathis. Later he married Lydia Bernetta Reed and they had two more children. Enlisted as Sergeant in the Confederate States Army at Paris, Tx. in Company D of a 'regular' Texas infantry regiment 10th Texas Regiment Cleburne's Division with rolls showing as W. B. Matthews and with sons Jacob, Wm, & Joe (Joseph DeKalb Mathis).
