Company E
Allen Pierce Page
- 1st Lieutenant
1C5R
Born on April 13, 1838 in Conecuh County, Alabama (probably at Fork Sepulga, where his grandfather, Jacob Page, had settled in 1820), to Kinchen Page and Cyrena/Serena Page (Wright). Allen was the 2nd child and the eldest son. At the time of the 1840 Census, the family had relocated to Butler County, Alabama but by the 1850 Census taken on October 1850, they were residents of Conecuh County. It is unclear when and why they moved between these two locales over this timeframe. Kinchen relocated the family to Texas sometime before 1860 Census, taken on August 20 of that year. Allen stayed behind in Alabama.
At the time of the 1860 Census and the outbreak of the War, Allen was employed as a clerk in his cousin James Wesley Page’s store in Butler County, Alabama. It appears he was residing with his cousin at the time of the census. He would make the move to Texas between June 20, 1860 and May 5, 1862, his date of enlistment.
He enlisted in Co. E, 11th Texas Infantry and mustered into service in Carthage, Panola County, Texas as a Private, alongside his two brothers and brother in law. He was promoted to 1LT possibly by election between February 1864 and April 1865. He served the entirety of his contact with this unit and was home in Panola County at the time of the surrender.

He lived with his parents for the remainder of his life. Moving with them to the Bethlehem community’s near Carthage, Panola County, Texas in 1860. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on March 1, 1862 three days prior to his nineteenth birthday.
He enlisted as a Private with Captain C. L. Davis’ Company E later Captain A. F. Jordan’s Company of the 11th Texas Infantry Regiment, Roberts’ Rangers, alongside his two older brothers and brother in law. Served in this capacity until June 23, 1862 when he was elected and assigned duty as 1st Lieutenant. The 11th Texas known as Walker’s Greyhounds were in a number of battles and skirmishes in Arkansas and the Red River Campaign in Louisiana.
1LT Page was wounded on April 8, 1864, at the Battle of Mansfield. He never fully recovered from his wounds and died on March 4, 1865, twenty six days before his twenty first birthday and just one day before Company E was ordered to Hempstead where they disbanded before their formal surrender on May 26, 1865. It is believed he was the last soldier of the 11th Texas Infantry Regiment to die during the war.
Brother in law, PVT Thomas Adolphus Hawthorn, died November 10, 1862 of sickness at Camp Nelson with Stephen by his side. Both of Jesse Page’s older brothers, 1LT Allen Pierce Page and PVT Stephen Pillie Page survived the war.
