John J Lester - Private
Enlisted at Ashland Virginia on August 19, 1861 as a private in Colonel Thomas Stanhope Flournoy's Sixth Virgina Cavalry.

Captured at Hanover Court House on May 12, 1864, Lester later died as a Prisoner of War at Point Lookout, Maryland on July 5, 1864.

Although I am not a relative of John J. Lester, I am in possession of an original letter written by Col. Flournoy stating that the horse John Lester was riding, was owned by Daniel Merritt who was entitled for any payments if the horse should be injured. The 'grey mare' was later shot & killed on Sept. 23, 1862 in the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) while Lester was riding as a courier for Col. Alfred H. Colquitt. The letter is signed by Flournoy and Lester. It is also signed by Capt. R. H. Owen who paid Merrit $60 for the horse.
