Claudius (Claude) Goff Rader - 1st Sergeant
Claude Goff Rader first served in Co. E, 31st VA Infantry and was released at Bunker Hill, VA (now WV) because he was underage when he enlisted. He later joined Co. C, 20th VA Calvary. Claude was captured at the Battle of Droop Mountain, WV and spent many months as a POW first at Wheeling, WV then at Camp Chase, Ohio and then Fort Delaware, DE. He was paroled from Fort Delaware. While a POW at FT Delaware he went incognito with the name 1st Sergeant Charles G. Rader, 20th VA Cavalry. Not sure why he did this. There are also documents that list him as Captain C.G. Rader, 20th VA Calvary but I cannot verify the promotion from 1st Sergeant. Claude is buried at the Mill Creek Cemetery, Mill Creek, WV 26280.
