Henry Hopkins Dickenson - Captain |
Henry Hopkins Dickenson of Lebanon, Russell Co., Virginia
Henry H. Dickenson was the eldest son of nine boys, his parents being Charles Carrell Dickenson Sr. and Catherine Counts. Henry was born on May 23rd, 1837 in Russell Co., VA. Following the war he married Cornelia Quarles October 21, 1868 in Lebanon, Russell Co., VA.
-July 10th 1861 he formed Co. A, 29th Va. Infranty. More specifically they became Co. A, 29th Virginia Regiment- Infantry-Pickett's Division-General Corse's Brigade-Longstreet's Corps.
Originally Ed Smith was Captain. Later Henry Hopkins Dickenson became Captain.
Initially, Henry H. Dickenson was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. On may 13th 1862, he was promoted to 1st Lt. and on June 3rd 1862, to Captain.
On July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Northern Army of 90,000 met General Lee's army of 75,000. The battle ended July 3 and 'an indeterminate number of Russell County soldiers fought and died during those three days.' Captain Henry Hopkins Dickenson's company was included in General Pickett's division.
After fighting at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, family lore says he was commended with Full Honors (equivalent to the Medal of Honor for CSA?), the commendation being made by General Corse. In searching on a limited basis, I have not yet been able to find a record supporting that information. Henry Dickenson surrendered his Company to General Grant at Appomatox. On his return to Russell Co., he found that war deserters/robbers had attacked and stolen property from his family and their neighbors. He immediately organized a vigilante group, pursued the robbers and personally executed (shot) the leader and reclaimed the stolen property.
Henry Hopkins Dickenson died November 27th, 1903. He was buried in the Old North Church Cemetery, Lebanon, Russell Co., Virginia.

When he enlisted in the Confederate service, my great-great-grandfather William was 61 years of age and illiterate, so his name got spelled in various ways in the various musters, of which I have a record from enlistment by Captain Horne in 1862 through the period when the 29th Virginia was among the rear guard protecting Richmond while the Army of Northern Virginia went north into Pennsylvania prior to Gettysburg. Immediately afterward the 29th Virginia was sent west by railroad. His age was catching up with him, and his duties had already been switched to wagon and ambulance driver, acoording to the various muster records.

29th VA Regiment Cavalry (??)
Only one company of the 29th (Cavalry)?? Contained men from West Virginia and that was Co. H., Capt. Ebenezer Bruster’s Company. Most of the members of Bruster’s Company were from Tazewell County but some were residents of McDowell County.
The 29th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
It fought mostly in western Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Virginia.
The 29th Virginia was authorized in November, 1861, and was to contain seven companies under Colonel A.C. Moore and three companies at Pound Gap.
However, this organization never took place.
Moore's five companies from Abingdon and companies raised in the spring of 1862 evidently made up the nine-company regiment.
The men were recruited from the counties of Fayette, Raleigh, Mercer, Wise, Russell, Tazewell, Wythe, and Carroll.
It was assigned to the Valley District, Department of Northern Virginia, then moved to Kentucky where it was engaged at Middle Creek.
Later it saw action in Western Virginia and for a time served in North Carolina under General French.
In March, 1863, it totalled 732 men.
Attached to General Corse's Brigade the unit participated in Longstreet's Suffolk Expedition and during the Gettysburg Campaign was on detached duty in Tennessee and North Carolina.
In the spring of 1864 it returned to Virginia and took its place in the Petersburg trenches north and south of the James River and ended the war at Appomattox.
Many were lost at Sayler's Creek, and only 1 officer and 27 men surrendered on April 9, 1865.
The field officers were Colonels James Giles and Alfred C. Moore;
Lieutenant Colonels Alexander Haynes, William Leigh, and Edwin R. Smith;
and Majors Ebenezer Bruster, William R.B. Horne, and Isaac White.

The field officers were Colonels James Giles and Alfred C. Moore;
Lieutenant Colonels Alexander Haynes, William Leigh, and Edwin R. Smith;
and Majors Ebenezer Bruster, William R.B. Horne, and Isaac White.
