Alphesus Henry Hawkins - Unknown   
My 2nd Great Uncle, Alpheus Henry Hawkins bravely served in the 4th. Virginia Heavy Artillery which was reorganized into the 34th.Virginia Infantry Regiment. It appears that he had several assignments, one being in the Ambulance Corp's. I do not yet have his service records. He was born in Lewiston area of Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1835. He was severely wounded and died in 1895 from previous wound complications.

Patrick Alexander Tunstall - 4th Sergeant   
I've been doing some research in the Tunstall family album and have found that four Tunstall brothers fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War.Luckily their regimental information was recorded.Patrick was the third oldest of the four brothers and was wounded near Petersburg on or before Oct.14th 1864.He lost the lower portion of his right leg but survived the war.

On 16 Jun 1864, he suffered a gunshot wound to the face, entering the right side of his nose and exiting immediately in front of the left ear, during the prelude battle for Petersburg. Captured by the Union Army near Farmville on 6 Apr 1865. Released as a prisoner of war at Newport News on 15 Jun 1865; mustered out of the Confederate States Army, and signed oath of allegiance to the United States of America on the same date. Died 16 Mar 1904 and buried in Fairviw Cemetery, Buchanan, Virginia.

James enlisted in Edmondson's Halifax Heavy Artillery, along with his brother's, Robert P. and Littleton E. Spencer on March 14, 1862, Halifax Court House, He served on Gloucester Point until the Federal attack caused that position to be evacuated. The regiment moved to Chaffin's Bluff, on the James River, south of Richmond, where they were designated “Company F, 4th Regiment Virginia Heavy Artillery” and assigned to the command of General Henry Wise. The mission was to help defend Richmond. In April 1863 the regiment marched to Williamsburg and participated in an engagement at that city. In September 1863, the Regiment was sent to Charleston, SC. The name of the Regiment was changed on March 8, 1864 to the '34th Regiment Virginia Infantry.' On May 3, 1864, they were ordered back to Virginia; and on May 20th, they saw action in the battle of Clay's Farm. The regiment was then was moved to the Petersburg trenches. On July 30, 1864, the earth exploded a few hundred yards from their trenches and the famous 'Battle of the Crater' began. The Regiment remained in the trenches until April 1865, when they were sent to defend the Five Forks area and participated in the Battle of White of White Oak Road. The 34th then retreated with General Lee to Appomattox and fought in numerous skirmishes along the way including the battle of Saylor’s Creek. Before Lee surrendered, James participated in the final charge of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 and was paroled later that day.

Chilton (b. 12/08/1843 in Bedford County, Virginia) and they married on 11/08/1865 in Bedford County, Virginia. Husband to three wives and Father to 14 children over his lifespan, Pleasant Preston Chilton died in 1926 at Ansted, West Virginia. Born in Bedford County, Virginia on 17 Jan 1844. Enlisted in Bedford on 3 Mar 1862. While serving in Company G, 34th Virginia Infantry, he was wounded in action on 29 Mar 1865 at Hatcher's Run near Petersburg, Virginia, as the Confederate Army retreated from Petersburg. He was sent to Farmville Hospital on 2 Apr 1865. The gunshot wound in his right foot/leg resulted in amputation. He died on 1 May 1925.

Enlisted on August 12, 1862 at Staunton, 4th Regiment, Virginia Heavy Artillery, Co. H - was often detailed as a carpenter or wheelwright. Was wounded on May 20, 1864 at Clay''s Farm. Surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA, April 9, 1865. 34th Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Co. H - (Wise''s Brigade) - Organized at Buford''s Depot on June 1861, as Heavy Artillery: left for war in August 1861: mustered into service at Lynchburg: was known as ''Whorton''s Battery''. With more than 100 men it went from Staunton to Gloucester Point. After evacuation of Yorktown in May 1862, it ceased to be artillery, temporarily attached to Rode''s Brigade, took part in the Battle of Seven Pines, was known as ''Otey''s Battalion''. Went into that battle with 60 men, charged a battery, and came out with only 30 men, killing Captain Otey. After this, it was made Company H of the 34th Regm''t. One half were made prisoners at battle of ''Five Forks'', the remainder surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
