William enlisted along with his brother P.L.Pankey on 6 March 1862 in Capt. Kyle's Company Heavy Artillery. Enlisting at Appomatox Va. This unit was disbanded and became Co. B 20th Va. Heavy Artillery. His records take a strange turn as he is discharged 17 May 1862 and is elected a Justice of the Peace per S/O 113 A.G.O. 62 Para. 14.
