Peyton Clay Keesee
- Corporal
Peyton Keesee saw his brother William mortally wounded at Sharpsburg and assisted him to a field hospital in Sharpsburg. At some point in the time after, Peyton transferred to a calvary unit under Fitzhugh Lee. I'm not 100% certain of the unit but I believe it was the 5th VA Cavalry.

William was born about 1846 near Norfolk, Va. The 1860 census shows him at age 14 in 1860. It appears that he lied about his age as I find him as a Pvt. in Capt. B.Z. Prices Co. Va. Light Arty. aka Danville Artillery. He enlisted 22 April 1861. He served under, Capt. W.H. Rice, Capt. L.M. Shumaker and Capt. George W. Woodling in McIntosh's Battalion Light Artillery. There are 22 items in his archival file. The CMR for Sept - Oct 1862 states that he is wounded and at Danville. In Dec. 1863 he is in the hospital at Danville Va. suffering from Rheumatism. He appears on a roll at Appomattox Court House 9 April 1865. His wife Susan Gilbert Davis b. 1852 d. 7 Aug 1885 is buried in Magnolia Cem. in Charleston, SC. William appears on a census in 1880. I suspect he is buried alongside of his wife, but I have not found a marked grave. Further research shows that he fought in the following battles: Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign, Jackson's Valley Operations, Seven Days, Cold Harbor, Gains Mill, Malvern Hill, Maryland Campaign, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Bristo Station. May God rest his soul. He was the father-in-law of my distant cousin.
