Company C
Thomas Benjamin Traynham - Sergeant
Thomas B. Traynham was from Cluster Springs, Halifax County, VA., born 10/1/1836. He enlisted in Co. C on 5/20/1861, the Black Walnut Dragoons. In 1862 he was designated as Lee's lead courier and was promoted to Sgt. in July, 1863. He was wounded in his right leg during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on 5/8/1864 and survived two amputations on that leg. He was discharged on 11/24/1864 and died on 12/28/ 1910 in Cluster Springs. He is buried at at Oak Ridge cemetery in South Boston,VA.

After the war, a poem was written and published by S. H. Thompson, a college professor, which commemorated a ride Traynham undertook at the order of General Lee to deliver a critical message through Union lines to Stonewall Jackson.

Prior to one of his daughter's death in the 1970's, the family taped her life's reminisces wherein she related stories he told her about his experiences in the war and some anecdotes about his experiences around General Lee and Traveller whom he exercised for the general each morning on the way to Gettysburg.

Sgt. Traynham's prosthetic leg is on display at the South Boston-Halifax County Museum. He was my wife's paternal great grandfather.
