Company C
Claudius Goff Rader - 1st Sergeant
Claudius (Claude) Rader, my great-grandfather, first served in Co. E, 31st Virginia Infantry from 1861-1862. Company E was primarily a Highland County, VA Company but Claude joined in Beverly, VA (now WV). Claude was discharged in 1862 in Bunker Hill, VA right after the bloody Battle of Sharpsburg, MD. Reason for discharge: underage when he joined the CSA and the Confederate Government passed a law permitting soldiers to request a discharge if they were under the age of eighteen when they initially joined the CSA. In 1863 Claude joined Co. C, 20th Virginia Calvary as 1st Sergeant. He was captured at Droop Mountain, WV in December 1863 and remained a POW for the remainder of the war. He was processed at a POW camp in Wheeling, WV then sent to Camp Chase, OH for a short period and then for the remainder of the war at Fort Delaware, DE. While at the Fort Delaware Claude is listed in the POW records as Charles G. Rader (not as Claudius G, Rader) and as C.G. Rader, 1st Sergeant, Company C. 20th VA Infantry. Claude took the oath and was paroled in June 1865 and returned home to Randolph County, West Virginia where he spent the remainder of his life with the exception of a short period later in his life when he spent a short time in Brownsville, Texas living with his U.S. Army career officer son, Captain John Ewell Rader, Sanitary Corps.
