Grandmother- Ginsie Stratton. Mat. Grandfather- Samuel Smith; Mat. Grandmother- Sallie Ward. Never married, no children. VMI Record: Entered VMI- March 1, 1859; VMI Cadets at John Brown Execution, Harper’s Ferry, November 1859. List published in the Petersburg (VA) Daily Express of December 8, 1859. Resigned April 17, 1862 at his parents' request; Made Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1863 on July 2, 1869. Civil War Record: Served as Drill Master while at VMI for the Corps of Cadets when they were stationed at Richmond in the Spring of 1861; enlisted at Campbell Co. Court House on June 9, 1862 as Private in Co. I, 2nd Va. Cavalry. Mortally wounded in action March 17, 1863 at Kelly's Ford. Died- June 10, 1863 at his brother's house in Bedford, Va.

Infantry); promoted to Corporal July 17, 1861; Discharged Dec. 23, 1861 to enter VMI; re-enlisted Aug. 16, 1862 at Falling Creek in Co. I 53rd Va. Infantry; on detached service Jan.-Feb. 1863; promoted to Sergeant March 16, 1863; Mortally wounded in action and captured in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg July 3, 1863. Died- July 13, 1863 in US Hospital at Gettysburg, PA, from wounds received 10 days earlier.

John Bowie Gray - Private
John Bowie Gray was born at 'Travellers' Rest' in Stafford Co.,
Virginia on May 30, 1846. He was the son of John Bowie Gray and
Jane Moore Cave. He enrolled at VMI on September 29, 1863 and
participated in the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. After the Civil War he returned to the Institute and was graduated on July 4, 1867, standing 9th in a class of 11.
After graduation he returned to 'Travellers' Rest' and engaged in farming and stock raising. He married Mary Hunter on November 10, 1870; they had three children--Mary, Janie, and Aylmer. Gray died at his home on October 8, 1930.
