17th Wisconsin Infantry
Company Unknown
William Heath - Private
William Heath (Heth) enlisted October 28, 1864. He received $50 to substitute for John Prothers,of Wakeegan, Wisconsin. William's father, Perry Heath (Heth) was a Private in Company D, 25th Wisconsin Infantry, for three years. William Heath was reported KIA on 8 March 1865 at Wyse Fork (Second Battle of Kinston NC). However, the Beaufort National Cemetery records state that William died as a POW on 9 May 1865. He was part of a provisional detachment sent to bolster the 15th Connecticut. Both death dates are from Union Army documents and the conflicting dates are a mystery. Best guess is that William was taken POW, but was reported as KIA by his company.

Company B
Frederick RohlhoffRank Unknown
Frederick was drafted in September, 1864 and from what I gather, was not pleased as he was leaving his wife and several small children on their farm in N. Wis. But he marched from Savannah to Columbia to Raleigh, through swamps in winter and got frostbite on his feet so was permitted to ride in a wagon. He later applied for and was granted an additional pension for his sore feet but still lived until 1916. My grandfather remembered him riding into town in a horse and buggy to visit relatives. I now live in Columbia, SC, and wish that I could tell Frederick that his G-G-granddaughter now lives in the city that he would have seen go up in flames.

Company B
Anton Schulte - Corporal
Anton was born in Germany and emigrated to America with his family. Anton enlisted as a Corp. with his brother,LT. Martin Schulte in Co. B. of the 17th Wisconsin Infantry. The brothers enlisted in Eagle, Wisconsin. They fought in the Battle of Corinth, among others, before finding themselves dug in on the perimeter of Vicksburg, MS. Grant was hoping that a frontal assault would be enough to make Vicksburg fall. On 19 May, 1863, the 17th Wisconsin Infantry was ordered to attack. Martin and Anton rushed forward with their comrades in Co.B., taking fire from the Rebs. At some point it became painfully clear that Co. B. was the only part of the 17th Regiment that had gotten the order to attack. The members of Company B. found themselves out in front alone, outmanned and out gunned! The men did what they could to find cover and the opportunity to fall back. During this attack, Anton's brother was seriously wounded in both feet, but Anton seems to have gotten back to the regiment unscathed. Of course, the Battle of Vicksburg became a siege which was broken, and Vicksburg was taken in July.

Company B
Martin Schulte - 1st Lieutenant
LT. Martin Schulte was born in Germany and enlisted in the 17th in Eagle, WI., along with his brother, Corp. Anton Schulte. The brothers fought valiantly in the Battle Of Corinth, MS., amongst others. Martin suffered wounds in both feet at the Battle of Vicksburg on 19 May 1863. His brigade was ordered to attack a Rebel unit. Unfortunately, only Martin's company got the message. Company B bravely began the attack, realizing too late that they were out there alone! They made efforts to lie low and find cover until they were able to fall back. During this attack, Martin was shot in both feet. Family lore states that he walked on crutches for the rest of his life. Photos of him in 1914 do not show any crutches. He was, by all accounts, an ornery old man.
