Company F
James Eugene Hoyt - Private
James lived at Rutland Township, Dane County WI, when the war erupted. He enlisted in December 1863, but fell ill before leaving for his regiment. He thereby missed Sherman's Meridian Campaign of destruction in Mississippi, but arrived at his regiment in time to march with the Red River Campaign. He later participated in Battle of Tupelo against Forrest, the pursuit of Price across Missouri, and the landmark battle of Nashville (the greatest Union victory west of the Appalachians). He moved to Mobile Bay to help his regiment take Spanish Fort but fell ill with pneumonia and suffered lung troubles for the rest of his life thereafter, but the Union was saved. 'What your fathers attained with such difficulty, do not basely relinquish.' PILGRIM GRAVE MARKER
