Battle Of Gettysburg?
Posted on: 3/9/2019 1:10:33 AM
I'm just curious, I'd love more insight. I'm confused with who was fighting who and why. I'd also like to know more about General Barksdale, why was he important? Why did his words before death have such a huge impact?

A very warm welcome to you, viprit !

Please satisfy my curiosity, and give a brief summary of your knowledge of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the reasons for your interest in General Barksdale.

I would love to be able to discuss this with you .

Regards, Phil

Guys,

Here is a take on the death of CSA Gen Barksdale of Mississippi, perhaps it will shed some light on this part of the Gettysburg Battle!?

You’ve done it again, Dave : a superb little vignette that is both informative and moving. I found the pathos of the story compelling : the haughty fire eating secessionist being tended by a humble yankee soldier attempting to spoon fed him with water laced with morphine. An agonising death, but a defiant one....it’s almost a symbol of the fate of the Confederacy !

Thanks.

There's an excellent article in the Gettysburg Magazine Issue # 1 dated July 1989 titled ""Their Supreme Moment: Barksdale's Brigade at Gettysburg" by Terrence J. Winschel.

Anyone who takes the view that Lee’s army never really stood much of a chance of winning at Gettysburg, and that the outcome was more or less determined by the superior ground and resources in possession of the Federals, might reconsider that view after reflecting on the performance of Barksdale’s Brigade.
