WWII Enlistment and where stationed questions.
Posted on: 3/24/2019 3:46:29 PM
I have two uncles who served during WWII that I would love to find more information about. I have photos of them in uniform. My husband interviewed one of them once, along with my Dad who had been in the Battle of the Bulge. One of my uncles had been on the third wave on Omaha Beach and couldn't say much about that or what happened afterward. My husband said he was just too emotional to talk about it much.

I have looked at Ancestry, but there isn't much there. I don't know if I want to spend the money sending away for military records for them. I did for my Dad, but as I'm sure most of you know, there had been a big fire and records were burned, so I don't know what I can get there. And, I'm not a wife or daughter, so I'm not sure what limitations are.

Is there someplace else I can look? I know when they enlisted, what state they were living in, and what branches, but not much else.

Should I be posting this someplace else?

Thanks for any help.

If you know exactly what unit they were in at some point - and by exact I mean which company - you can track then prior to then and after then via Company Morning Reports. Yo likely will not get their records, which were likely destroyed by the fire, but you could find out what they did. Your best bet would be to contact a professional researcher like Golden Arrow.

I don't have that information, unfortunately. Sigh.

Thank you.

Then your best bet may be to check with their county courthouse to see if they filed a copy of their separation document (DD 214) with them. Many veterans were encouraged to do so and did, so there is a pretty good chance of that. From that you will at least be able to find where and when they served and what unit they were discharged from.

You may also want to check with various veterans groups, VFW and the like, to see if he was ever a member. He would have had to supply certain information.

Thank you both so much for those suggestions. I live 200 miles away from where they enlisted, but my brother still lives in the area. I will ask him.

Appreciate your help!

Send SOS to all the family members you know, asking them to check old letter collections. Great Aunt Nagini may have saved letters from "the boys".
