The Road Not Taken by Max Boot

I just started reading this book. The subtitle is "Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam." The prologue discusses the lead up to and the actual assassination of SVN President Ngo Dinh Diem in November 1863, and how that was the beginning of our long and costly nightmare in Vietnam. So far, I agree with the author's portrayal of events, and those he fingers for blame in the overthrow of the Diem regime, including Henry Cabot Lodge, our ambassador to Vietnam at the time of the assassination, and NY Times reporter David Halberstam, whose sensationalized reporting the American State Department was accepting as gospel. The book is 700 pages long, so it will take awhile to plow through it.

After posting this, I noticed the date 1863 instead of 1963. Difficult sometimes to mentally separate the Civil War era with more current events.
