Name: Robert Andrew MillerRank: 2nd Lieutenant Company: B
Robert Andrew Miller was born 27 February 1833 in Lynchburg, VA. In 1856, he came to Oktibbeha County with his mother, father, younger sister, and brother to meet up with family who had already moved there. In 1859, Robert Andrew Miller married Martha Jane McDowell.

Early in 1861 he joined the Confederate Army and assisted in raising a company. Soon after he became a 2nd Lt. of the 24th Mississippi Regiment Company B, Walthall's Brigade. He was in several skirmishes until the Battle of Murphreesboro when the enemy was driven away, their artillery captured. In a second charge over an open field into a cedar brake, he was wounded in the leg. An artery had been severed by a musket ball and he was carried from the the field. He would have bled to death had it not been for a small silk handkerchief he had bought at a fair the day before. This was tied above the wound and he was carried to a private house. When the enemy vacated the town, Lt. Miller was determined to leave and was carried to the depot in a wagon by a couple of comrades. On arrival at the depot they found all the rail cars crowded with wounded and the train pulled out leaving them in the rain. There was one more chance, for a passenger train pulled up, and the comrades lifted Lt. Miller to the coach and to the only remaining seat. He was taken to the hospital in Atlanta where the surgeons decided to amputate his leg, to which he objected saying he had rather die than lose his leg. After suffering for five months part of the time between life and death, he was permanently crippled and was discharged from the Army. He returned home to find it desecrated. He began life over again and helped build a new South.

Lt. Miller and his wife, Marth Jane McDowell had 10 children, all born in Clay County.

Name: Robert Hudspeath BourlandRank: Lieutenant Company: F
My great-great grandfather, Lt. R.H. Bourland (he often told that he was elected Lt. 'cause I could read and was 30 years old'). Son of Judge James Spears Bourland and Mary Hudspeath Bourland. He fought in all campaigns of the 24th. His home in Itawamba county was burned by General Shermans forces while he was away. My G-G-Grand mother and a ***female slave lived in the barn that was spared. After the surrender R.H. Bourland returned home made the remaining barn the primary residence, raised a family. The former ***female slave remained with the family for an additional 30 years, and was considered a member of the family.

Robert was a Itawamba County supervisor (road supervisor)for many years after the war. It is reported that he suffered great grief when two of his young grand children died after eating green apples and falling asleep in the sun. He died shortly thereafter and his wife (my gg grandmother) died the next day. They are buried in the same grave at the Bourland Family Cemetary, Peaceful Valley, Itawamba County, Mississippi.

Robert had three other brothers that fought in the war. One was killed at Shiloh. One 'retired' before the cessation of hostilities, and the other remainded until the surrender.

*** The exact status of the African American female that stayed with the family is not known for sure. The 1860 census list her and two other slaves owned by Robert. My Grand Father always told that Robert released all of his slaves before he left to Muster into the 24th. This would seem practical as General Sherman allowed this lady to remain with my G-g-grandmother, and she is mentioned in the 1870 census as a family member. There is no mention of the other two slaves on that census.

Jesse and his brother John Martin Key, both served with the 24th Mississippi Company I. Both were killed during the Siege of Atlanta. An old family story that is told that after the war Jesse's father paid someone 50$ to erect a tombstone on Jesse's grave in Georgia. After the war, Jesse and John's commanding officer, J.M. McWilliams located their parents to return to them the 50$ in gold they had in their possession when they died. Able and Elizabeth never spent the money due to the fact that it was the exact amount that they had paid for the grave marker.
