38th Georgia Infantry (CSA)
Ancestor Info
Name: Andy J. GardnerRank: Private Company: A

Andy J. Gardner was the younger brother of Charles Gardner. Charles Gardner volunteered for the 38th Georgia Infantry when it was established. The 38th Georgia was known as the Dekalb Murphy Guards. They were sent to Virginia as Lawton''s Brigade and were assigned to Stonewall Jackson''s division. The 38th Georgia lost almost the entire number of volunteers before the war ended. Of 1,200 men that joined, only 105 remained when the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Andy was wounded and captured at a battle in Winchester, Virginia on September 19, 1864. Andy later died from the wounds on October 23, 1864 at a US Army Field Hospital. There were four Gardner brothers that joined the 38th Georgia Voluteer Infantry. All of the brothers were killed in the war. I grew up in Dekalb County, Georgia near their original home.
