Jesse inlisted in company G with two of his brothers in 1861- All three were present with Lee at Appomattox Jesse was elected to the office of chancery clerk of Choctaw Co., Ms in 1892 and 1895-Jesse was a Populist Candidate- quote from the book by J.P. Coleman, 'Choctaw County Chronicles' (1913) 'In july Jesse Hughes , former chancery clerk and ex-Confederate Soldier of Company G, Eleventh Alabama Infantry Regiment, attended the Blue and Gray Reunion on Gettysburg's bloody battlefield, the fiftieth anniversary of this terrible encounter. When he returned home, Old Soldier Hughes reported that he found the very spot where he had been taken prisoner during the battle. He was exchanged shortly after Gettysburg and returned to his unit
