On 12 May 1862, James enlisted with Capt. Halliday's Co. D, 26th Inf. at Centreville, Bradley Co. AR. In October of 1863 he had been home to see about making provisions for his family and, according to his widow's pension application, was rumored killed by federal soldiers. His widow was Sarah Jane Byrd; her claim was rejected by reason of 'No proof of husband's death.' James Leon was the son of Jesse Ashcraft and Sarah McClellan.
