He enlisted as a private in the Army of the Confederacy on 28 Feb 1862. He served in Company I of the 26th Alabama Infantry. He was captured during the battle at Chancellorsville, Virginia, on 3 May 1863, and then sent to City Point, Virginia for exchange on 10 May 1863. He was wounded in neck at the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and captured at a field hospital on 5 Jul 1863. After his capture he was sent to DeCamp General Hospital on David's Island, New York, in Long Island Sound. He was again sent on 12 Sep 1863 to City Point, Virginia, for exchange. His exchanged took place on 15 Sep 1863, and he was furloughed on 24 Sep 1863. A brief history of his regimant can be found at:
