Enlisted as a Private in Hampton''s Company of the Virginia Volunteers (which became Company G, which later became (2nd) Company I, 63rd Infantry Regiment Virginia) on 15 May 1862 at Camp Jackson by Capt. Litrill H. Hampton for three-year period. Appears on Company Muster-in Roll dated 27 May 1862 at Abingdon, Virginia. From 1 September to 20 October 1862 he was ''employed on extra duty'' as a blacksmith. Paid by Capt. Henderson on 1 May 1863. Detailed as Brigade Blacksmith on 23 May 1863 at Saltville, Virginia, by order of Brig. Gen. Williams. Listed as present on Company Muster Roll for May/June 1863. Paid by Capt. Henderson on 1 July 1863. Listed as absent on Company Muster Roll for July/August and Sept./Oct. 1863 and Jan./Feb. 1864 due to blacksmith detail. Rejoined regiment on 22 May 1864. Listed as present on Company Muster Roll for May/June 1864. Promoted to 5th Sergeant on 01 July 1864 by special order. Listed as present on Company Muster Roll for July/August 1864. Hospitalized on 23 February 1865 at CSA Hospital #11, Charlotte, North Carolina; complaint is listed as ''haematureas'' (haematuria = bloody urine). Returned on 03 March 1865. (He was my great-great-grandfather.)
