Jacob enlisted on Sept 23, 1861 for 3 years. He reenlisted as a 'Veteran Volunteer' on Jan 3, 1864 and was promoted Corporal on Dec 30, 1864, and Sgt. on March 1, 1865. He was also a blacksmith with the regiment. He was discharged at San Antonio, TX on Nov 22, 1865. It is believed he took part in the Battle of Prairie Grove and the Siege and Fall of Vicksburg.
He was born Oct 23, 1841 in Frederick Co. VA., the son of George and Olivia Fulkerson. The family came to Coles Co.,IL in 1858 when Jacob was 17. After the war he returned to Coles Co., IL but in 1882 he moved with his wife Lucinda and their children to North Dakota Territory where he died on Dec 7, 1913. He is buried in Churchs Ferry Cemetery Ramsey, ND.
