William Henry Manley - Private |
William Henry Manly had come from a staunch Unionist family in Rutledge, Grainger Co., TN. He and his brother, Jacob, were forced into Confederate service with the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry (Ashby's), enlisting at Knoxville, TN on 3 Apr 1863. William Manly is found to be AWOL at Tunnell Hill, GA by 4 March 1864. He managed to return back home. Shortly, from his Grainger Co., TN home, he made his way to the home of his mother's sister in Jacksonville, Illinois. There, He enlisted in Company I, 155th Illinois Infantry. He remained in service of the Union Army until war's end. Post-war, he served in the 17th U.S. Infantry.
