Thomas Elrod and his two sons, Samuel and Edward, were hurriedly drawn into the ranks of Company G in response to Morgan's Raid of 1863, like the rest of the regiment. Company G was raised at Orleans, Indiana.
Another of Thomas Elrod's sons, Moses, was chief of a military hospital in New Albany Indiana at the time, and became an eminent member of the state's medical and scientific communities in later years.
