Mine Creek, Little Osage River, Marias Des Cygnes, Oct 25. Disbanded 10/29/1864. James D Cartwright, son of Samuel Cartwright and Minerva Ellis, born about 1842 in Tennesee, family removed to Butler County KY in 1849 and then after father died, Minerva Ellis Cartwright moved family to Bourbon County, Kansas Territory between 1856 and 1860. Pension Claim 2/7/1879 by Mother Minerva A Cartwright on James D. Cartwright B6 KS Infantry, Application 241488, Certificate 192024...but we believe he was a casualty of the civil war during his service (but unverified). James D Cartwright would be my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.

This unit was called the 6th Kansas Volunteers. Formed in July of 1861. It had three infantry companies and five or six cavalry companies. The infantry companies were mustered out on 6th of March 1862. The unit became the 6th Kansas Cavalry.
