A cousin, Sgt. Riley Mitchell was from Trigg Co, KY.
An artillery veteran of the Mexican War, he enlisted in Cobb's 1st KY. Light Artillery in 1861 to teach volunteers how to serve their guns.
Credited with artillery sinking of Union gunboat during siege of Vicksburg, Miss.
Commanded Cobb's Battery during Baton Rouge campaign in Aug. 1862.
Discharged on account of old age in 1863, later reenlisted in Cobb's Battery following capture by Union troops at home in Trigg Co, KY.
Died of consumption in 1866 contracted while in C.S. Army.

Later reenlisted in Jan. 1863 in Cobb's 1st KY. Light Artillery at Tullahoma, Ala.
Died in hospital at Atlanta, Ga. on 28 Nov, 1863.
