William Abijah Kennedy - Private   
20th Infantry Regiment (often called the Lovell Regiment)was assembled and mustered into Confederate service at Camp Lewis, Louisiana in February 1862. Some of the men were recruited in Orleans Parish. The unit participate in conflicts at SHILOH and FARMINGTON shared in the KENTUCKY Campaign, then was assigned to D.W. Adams' and Gibson's Brigade, Army of the Tennessee. It was consolidate with the 13th Louisiana Regiment from December 1962 to Arpil 1864. The unit fought with the Army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta. Served with Hood in Tennessee, and ended the war defending Mobile. At SHILOH this regiment took 507 men into action, but only 289 moved to FARMINGTON. The 13th/20th reported 20 killed, 89 wounded, and 78 missing at MURFREESBORO, lost 43-percent of the 289 engaged at CHICKAMAUGA, and totaled 191 men and 71 arms in December, 1863. The 20th had 59 effectives in November, 1864 and surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The field officers were Colonels Augusts Reichard and Leon Von Zinken, Lt. Colonels S.L. Bishop, Samuel Boyd, and Charles Guillet.

Kennedy, William, Pvt. Col F, 20th La. Inf. En. Aug. 18, 1861, Camp Moore, La. Appears on List dated Cairo, Ill., Oct. 25, 1862, of prisoners leaving Cairo, Ill., Oct 25, 1862, en route for Vicksburg, Miss., for exchange. Exchanged from Str. Esmeralda, Nov. 1, 1862. Rolls from July, 1863, to Feb., 1864. Absent, sick, since Sept. 20, 1863, from wounds Recd. at Chickamauga. Rolls from March, 1864, to Aug. 31, 1864. Absent, wounded at Battle of Chickamauga, Sept. 20, 1863.

Kennedy was transported to LaGrange, Georgia for treatment of his wounds. He died in LaGrange on Oct. 13, 1863 and is buried at the Confederate Cemetery on Miller Street in LaGrange where there are over 300 other Confederate soldiers buried.
